Currently using a vinyl backdrop and a 400d to take product photography on a white background.

Looking at upgrading to a 550d, a whiteboard (like used in a school) and a speedlite 430ex II.

Sound like a good plan to get a crisp clear white background?

Thanks,

Andy

Would a whiteboard not reflect too much light back? I think you'd have to be careful with that.

Theres nothing like blowing out a good vinyl/material backdrop. I would put the whiteboard money towards a manual flash or two which would be considerably cheap than your current flash, but complement it nicely, as I can't see you needed TTL for set up shots like you mentioned.

Hope that helps.

edit-

I have a YN560 flash, it's manual and does the job well. If I wasn't using lights powered by the mains for indoor work then I'd probably using a few of the 560s.

Go for matt colours for a backdrop, if you are using a flash. the backdrop will reflect all the light it see's, so you'll wash out on alot of your exposures.

You can buy backdrops from Amazon for very cheap, just depends on what size and texture/pattern you want!
