Park cameras and WHE are advertising this (soon to be released) lens as £799 pre-order. If it has the focus speed of the ef 85 f/1.8 and IQ approaching that of the 85L, it should be winner (sorry, not familiar with the Nikon/Sony/Olympus equivalents). For me, it's going to have to be that good to justify throwing £799 after it. However, if it's as nice as my Siggy 50, then it may just have to be procured...

What are your thoughts? Will this lens be able to compete with the alternatives at this price point? Do we need another 85???

Price-wise that seems reasonable - I can only speak from the point of view of the Niikon and Sony versions.

Its only going to be worth the money if optically it can play alongside the Zeiss f/1.4 in Sony fit, and the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 AF-D - and there is nothing wrong opically with either of those...

£799 in a-mount (Sony) as well. Given that the Zeiss 85/1.4 is £1k from RGB, the Sigma is going to need to be stellar at that price.

Actually I'd love to have a go with one of the Zeiss's, but they're MF, and my eyesight is crap!

I think I'd rather have the Canon 85 f1.8 and save myself £500 tbh. £800 is a lot of money

That seems pretty sensible to me, personally I really wish canon would refresh some of it's basic cheaper primes, the 85mm 1.8 for example would be almost perfect if they would just put roounded aperture blades in it and personally I'd much rather they put usm on the fifty 1.8 and charged a hundred punds more than made it massive and increased the speed as 1.8 is plenty. Some of the other older primes like the 28mm f2.8 really could do with a minor optics upgrade as well these are pretty old designs these days.

I'm waiting for this to become available and if Sigma are true to form I've no doubt it'll be better than the Canon f1.8, and offer something that the Canon f1.8 doesn't offer, f1.4, and it'll come with a hood and a case too.

I don't know if I'd use one much as I like wider lenses but if I go full frame this new Sigma will replace my existing Sigma 50mm f1.4 which will in turn replace my Sigma 30mm f1.4.

I don't know how many of us actually need this new Siggy, but life's too short to have to need things before buying them.

My 85/1.4 and 16-80 Zeiss lenses AF fine :D. You must be using the wrong brand of camera :p

(intended humorously, before anyone gets upset)

Ha ha. Your initial comment was fine, no worries! Was just the bit you put in parentheses that wound me RIGHT UP :annoyed::boxer:

;)

Same here.

I'm certainly not lusting after it yet; I'll give it am few months for it to collect some reviews. Would be nice if it's a winner though.
