Looks very interesting. Just waiting until there are more lenses out as that's the stumbling block at the moment.
 
Not a big fan of its looks, especially as the lens in taller than the body.

It should be very adaptable indeed.

In theory it should also take Sony lenses, but I'm not really sure of the point in using large lenses on a small body really.
 
They're not cheap:

NEX-5 at Warehouse Express - £600 with the 18-55 lens / £1000 with an 18-200 lens.

Sweep Panorama (226 degrees) sounds like fun though.
 
High ISO performance looks impressive compared to M4/3 but it has no hotshoe/EVF, massive lenses, and (most importantly ;) ) it's really fugly.

Me to, as its only 5mm smaller than the Pen EP-1 and then you stick huge lenses like those made for it on it, kinda defeats the object of compact and pocketable!

No!!!!

I love the look, reminds me of my oldF717 when it has a lens attached.

The no hotshoe is a pain but they would have put the annoying Minolta one rather than a standard hot shoe.

I wonder if Canon/Nikon will follow with similar bodies?

I'd love a small body that I could use all my lenses with...

Sorry but that looks really unbalanced and silly. Big part of the appeal of M4/3 is not just the compact body but the compact lenses too.

edit: Oh and your 717 was fugly too, sorry! :)

I think it is inevitable that Canon and Nikon will enter the mini-slr market and probably sooner rather than later. The Micro 4/3rd's camera's are finally starting to take off and the big boys won't want to miss out in such a potentially lucrative market.

The EVF on the G1 is really very good - possibly better than the optical one on Canon's I've used.

I want to take the pictures of the fight with my GF1 of course, well the 717 is just plain bloody ugly :lol:

Fine for primes but redundant for zooms.

I was excited by the NEX cameras but having read more information I’m not so sure. The 16mm has distortion, the kit lens has barrel distortion wide and pincushion at 50mm. Obviously this can be corrected in software but you would have expected more.

The picture quality looks very good from what I’ve seen as is the ISO. The biggest downer for me is the menu system, nice to look at but probably a nightmare if you like to make changes quickly and frequently.

I do think it will sell very well but not to enthusiasts, more the style conscious ipod generation.

Any chance you could point me in the direction of a review on the 16mm lens as I've not seen one yet. I had been considering selling my Canon G9 and replacing it with a Panasonic GF-1 with 20mm lens but the Sony is a good deal cheaper so would be tempting if it works well.
 
No mode dial, no hotshoe, no viewfinder - def doesn't seem to be aimed at 'enthusiasts' like M4/3. Seems like Sony don't want to make it so close that it harms sales of their SLRs.

Sony are very clear that they are definitely not aiming it at that market.

The camera doesn't interest me (for the same reasons you state) - I need a VF and some knobs to twiddle. I don't want a Liveview camera (at all, from anyone), I like a nice optical VF.

Looks as if all you need to do is drill a couple of holes in the camera and you're all set :lol:

I would also like to see Canon & Nikon enter the mirrorless mini-DSLR market, but not sure how fast they'll do it.

My bet is on a new hybrid still/video system from Canon, with a bayonet mount and a very short flange focal distance. Hopefully APS-C sensor size, can't realistically hope for more from them as they will want to protect the high end. Whether it will look like a camcorder or a P&S - no idea. But I think they might even make 2 form factors with the same sensor/mount/lenses.. One can dream, eh?

Now if it had a flange focal distance of 16mm or less.. you could probably put C-mount movie glass on it :D But u4/3 and Sony E-mount (in the new NEX) are both 20mm and there's probably a reason for that. But still, it would give the ability to mount lots of old great lenses on it.

The adapter for EF lenses would of course happen as well, though it would be pretty big.. 20mm -> 44mm needs an inch of adapter already. But yes, I want to hang some big white lenses on a P&S.. bring it on :)

Edit: OOOPS.. seems like I somehow misssed a lot of the later posts, the Sony video camera looks exactly like what I think Canon will roll out.
