currently use a 17-85.Was considering a 24-70.Hows this lens on a 450d?Suggestions of other lens?thanks in advance

Sounds like a heavy beast and you might need the battery grip so it evens the weight distribution.

I think you are better off with a Tamron 17-50mm which is pretty lightweight and will be an excellent lens on your camera.

also for general photography, 24mm isn't that wide on a crop format so I would scrap that lens and go for the Tamron.

checked reviews looks like a good fast lens.Forgot to say wanted a lens to cover focal range up to other lens 70-200. so would need a 1.4 tc with the Tamron.Is there a lens covering 50-70mm?

Hi I have got the 450d and I have the canon 17-55mm, although I do not have anything from 55mm to 70mm before the 70-200 starts I have never had a problem. I went from the 17-85mm to the 17-55mm and have never regreted it the IQ is excellent and the f2.8 is really usefull.

The Tammy 17-50mm F2.8 has a lot of bang for the bucks - and I doubt you'd miss the 50-70mm range.

Photoplus canon edition tests them this month.

1st = 17-55 f2.8 = great lens if you want the f2.8
2nd = 15-85 = great lens if you want the width and reach
3rd = 16-50 Tokina
4th = 17-70 sigma - best value award for a combination of reach and reasonably fast (2.8-4)

Cheers

One question to ask is: do you use the 17 - 24 mm range a lot? If you do, then the 24-70 might not, indeed, be exactly what you want. If all of your photos are at the 85mm end, then it's a pretty different case.

If...you don't shoot wide.....want to future proof in case you go FF...and you can afford it. Go for the 24-70 2.8 and get a battery grip...maybe gym membership. It's a Mutha !

I would suggest looking at all your pics and the focal length used to take them. I sold my 300D last year with its kit lens.
I found my 28-135 was simply not wide enough, recently purchased a tamron 17-50 f2.8, cracking lens, nice and sharp.
There is a program that will look at your pics and tell you the shooting parameters on a table and graph, someone will know the name, I can't recall it at present.

The 24-70 is freakin' huge, and heavy. Seriously, you won't appreciate the size of that MF until you see it in person.

Then the hood to go with it makes it even bigger. On a 450D you will be wondering where the body is hiding behind it... even with a battery grip. But if the focal length is what you're after... go for it!

People keep giving these reasons as a negative against this lens. It baffles me a bit. I never found it to be particularly big, nor heavy. Even one of my lady friends, who's tiny compared to the average man, use it as her walkabout lens.

So, while it's not the size of a 20mm pancake lens it's not of such size and weight that it would be valid reasons against it.

There is also the 24-105 f4L IS to consider. It's cheaper, lighter and smaller than the 24-70 but yes it's f4 but it has IS!!!

It wasn't a negative, it was just an observation and a reminder. I myself honestly didn't realise how huge the lens was until I saw it in person.

I'm thinking the 15-85 but I'm tempted by the 24-105 myself.

I love my 70-200 f4

I think I'd end up having to get a wider lens.

Fair enough. As you say though, put on the hood and it's not the most inconspicuous piece of equipment. :) At the end of the day the result it produces should outweigh all that though.

I personally like a bit of weight; after having used the 50mm almost exclusively for 2-3 weeks now, it was like coming home to that tried and tested mistress when putting on the 24-70...

Isn't it more about balance though, this lens is going to dwarf the body involved? Different for you altogether.

Quite possibly so. I have no experience with 450D, so can't comment on that.

As the old cliché goes, size shouldn't matter. If you've determined that the 24-70 is what you need to produce the pictures you want, I don't see a reason why it couldn't be used on any camera.

Though I might change my stance on that if I ever see it hooked up on a smaller camera body... :)

The 24-70 is about 1 kilo in weight but don't let that put you off, you notice it when you get it and then it becomes the norm. I'll use mine all day long with no problems at all.

Do you know anyone with one to try? I would expect you could go to your local store and try one of theirs to try out how it feels and also get some test shots too - you may be able to try out a range of lenses and see which one you prefer.

There's also the 24-105 to think about if you don't need the f2.8, you could then get a 10-22 with the money you save and have the wide end covered as well.

Just gaffer tape a bag of sugar on the camera, that will give an idea of size and weight of the 24-70 :lol:

That's without the hood and the zoom retracted lol
