Sounds like a heavy beast and you might need the battery grip so it evens the weight distribution.
I think you are better off with a Tamron 17-50mm which is pretty lightweight and will be an excellent lens on your camera.
also for general photography, 24mm isn't that wide on a crop format so I would scrap that lens and go for the Tamron.
The 24-70 is freakin' huge, and heavy. Seriously, you won't appreciate the size of that MF until you see it in person.
People keep giving these reasons as a negative against this lens. It baffles me a bit. I never found it to be particularly big, nor heavy. Even one of my lady friends, who's tiny compared to the average man, use it as her walkabout lens.
So, while it's not the size of a 20mm pancake lens it's not of such size and weight that it would be valid reasons against it.
It wasn't a negative, it was just an observation and a reminder. I myself honestly didn't realise how huge the lens was until I saw it in person.
I personally like a bit of weight; after having used the 50mm almost exclusively for 2-3 weeks now, it was like coming home to that tried and tested mistress when putting on the 24-70...
Isn't it more about balance though, this lens is going to dwarf the body involved? Different for you altogether.
The 24-70 is about 1 kilo in weight but don't let that put you off, you notice it when you get it and then it becomes the norm. I'll use mine all day long with no problems at all.
Do you know anyone with one to try? I would expect you could go to your local store and try one of theirs to try out how it feels and also get some test shots too - you may be able to try out a range of lenses and see which one you prefer.

Then the hood to go with it makes it even bigger. On a 450D you will be wondering where the body is hiding behind it... even with a battery grip. But if the focal length is what you're after... go for it!
Just gaffer tape a bag of sugar on the camera, that will give an idea of size and weight of the 24-70![]()
a rather crude way of demonstrating it but that's pretty much spot on!
