Right, I'm in need of some advice and guidance from the more tech/web savvy amongst you....

I've decided to setup a website to host my pictures and maybe sell a few prints etc and have some kind of marketing strategy in place, but I won't go into that in this post. I used Photium to setup the site and it is coming together nicely, and I have got the domain name registered so thats all good.

Now, I know naff all about meta titles/descriptions/tags and how best to use them or word them to best effect. What I'd like is a bit of advice on this, and how this all fits in with SEO and listings and so forth? Its obviously important for people to be able to find your site amongst the thousands on the net, so I'm keen to get this right as much as I can within the limits/constraints that come from using a site created using Photium.

The two most important meta tags is your title tag (the link you click on in Google) and your description tag (the description under the link). You need to get your keyword phrases into these, but don't just list keyword use descriptive sentances.

eg. A Photographer in Newcastle

Title: Peter Pan :: Wedding Photographer Newcastle covering Tyne and Wear and the North East offering a range of Wedding Packages

Desc: We offer stunning wedding photography for your special day. We are based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, (North East) but travel throuhout the UK

Ok here Peter Pan is aiming at local weddings, keyphrases to find this site may include:

- Wedding Photographer Newcastle
- Wedding Photography Tyne and Wear
- Wedding Photography Packages Newcastle

Before you choose keywords do a little research. Phrases such as Wedding Photographer UK will be very competitive so it's best to start local with phrases that are less competitive.

When you have chosen your keywords you should now add them into your webpage text especially on your front page.

NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP - GET LINKS TO YOUR SITE!

You now need to get links to your site, these links are best from relevant websites. Each link you get to your site the more Google thinks 'People are linking to this site, this site must be important. I'll move this site up the rankings'.

Each link you get the more Google likes you. If you have 30 links from Golf sites Google will not move you up the rankings for photography searches as the sites linking to you have no relevance to photography, it knows what your site is about by the keywords on it.

Look for photography directories, ask other photographers to exchange links get as many links as you can!

When you add your site to directories make sure the title for the link uses a keyword you have choosen such as 'Wedding Photographer Newcastle'

Do you know what who your competition is? Do some research, add their site to this tool, it will tell you how many links they have to their website and from where. You need to get more links to your site to get to the top, links are key!
