I'm looking for a new laptop for general use, but occasional LR /PS use, which I suppose means I need more storage than on my current (SP4 w 256gb SSD).
Anyone have any suggestions, it's years since I had genuinely useful IT knowledge.

If it helps at all... I got my current laptop from PC Specialist who build to order. Might be worth a look as they give advice on the spec based on what you want to do with the kit.

I think with any questions like this, more information is needed. Budget, screen size, overall weight (affected by screen size choice ;) ), need to be portable.
After lugging 15.6" laptops around occasionally for a number of years, I won't go larger than 14" now. If the laptop may never leave the home, that may not be important.

I bought, on a recommendation from here, a really top spec Dell Core i9 with 64Gb RAM and 1Tb SSD for about £2.5k a year ago, which is probably way over specced for your requirement but I needed it for work too, however it led me to the refurbished stuff at Dell which offers good as new high spec stuff for realistic prices, worth checking out.

I like Lenovo's laptops. I have a 14" Ideapad 5 (now the 5 Pro) for carrying about and a 16" Legion 5 Pro (now up to Gen 7) for use at home. The 16" 2560x1600 screen is particularly good. I'm also now sticking with AMD Ryzen CPUs rather than Intel's latest offerings as they give better bang for buck.
But, as already said, we do need a bit more detail from you.

If you're wanting to use it for LR/ PS, the big factor that will limit your choice is the screen - comparatively few laptops have good IPS screens, with high sRGB / Adobe RGB coverage - most being the higher end models.
As others have mentioned, budget is a big factor, as is how portable you want it to be - if you need it as light as possible that will again restrict choice.

I have also used Dell outlet in past and excellent service with gtee, they have different grades of refurb eg scratch and dent, might be worth waiting until Black Friday 25/11.

Take a look at the Surface laptops, other than that the Dell Precision 5000 series are pretty nice

Sorry for not adding enough detail.
I'd like portable, for small amounts of portable processing, but I have a decent external IPS screen for more serious amounts of processing. decent sized SSD

I don't really want to spend a grand, so not sure I can run to a Dell XPS.

In the past I've had Dell, Lenovo and HP, and currently using a Surface Pro which is only unsuitable for keeping because of the small SSD.

I'd have suggested an XPS too, but if that's out of range then some of the Honor 'Mate' series look good. We have a Lenovo here that's good except the screen isn't up to editing standards.

Which model of Surface Pro? The newer ones do have a user replaceable SSD. It's a weird size but its easily accessible

OK I think this deserves an update - and I also feel I ought to write a review, I've just purchased an Asus Duo, which appears to be a great laptop for Lightroom and Photoshop
