New Windows7 build - DVD drive problem

I've just bought a new desktop with no OS and have installed Windows7 on it. This was done from the Microsoft DVD. Everything installed ok and I've updated Windows with all the patches, etc. I've now come to load some other software from disc and the PC doesn;t reckon there's a disc in the drive.

In Windows Explorer under "Devices with Removable Storage" it lists the DVD RW Drive (D. However with a disc in and double clicking the drive I get the following message window "Insert a disc. Please insert a disc into drive D:" and the drive pops open.

I've tried Googling but can't see anything yet. Any advice would be most gratefully received. Thanks

Have you installed all of the correct chipset and storage drivers for the motherboard?

Hi Neil,

I haven't as they are on a DVD which the machine can't read. Would you suggest installing them from a drive on another networked laptop or even via USB stick?

Yeah that's fine or download them if your have internet on that box

Tried a few things including the downloads but not working. I think there may be a problem with the drive as it doesn't sound like it's reading properly and won't even allow me to boot from it when restarting the machine. Back to the shop tomorrow I think.

Odd that it let you install from though. Has the machine been moved? Wouldn't be impossible for the sata cable to become loose.

It's now back up and in full running order, I took the PC back in today and they confirmed that the DVD drive was faulty. Replaced it with no questions asked.
