Newbie Lens Suggestion

I am just starting off in the DSLR world having many moons ago had a basic Minolta SLR and more recently a compact p&s. Ihave picked up a Canon 40D and a EF-S 18-55mm IS lens. To begin with I just want to learn my way around the camera and take a whole load of shots to get used to the feel and settings, before deciding what my main focus will be.

During this learning period I do not want to spend a vast amount on lenses until I am certain what I really need. However, I do think I will need something with more length than the 18-55mm. I have been looking at picking up a Canon 55-250mm IS lens but would be interested on any other ideas for a relatively inexpensive alternative for use during this learning period .

Cheers

Welcome to the forum. It may be a good idea if your were also to say what other areas of photography you are likey to be shooting as this will definitely affect the advice given by other people on the forum.

Good luck

To be honest to begin with it is likely to be a very eclectic mix. I guess most will be landscapes, my kids in their various activities and maybe some wildlife such as foxes and deer as they are close by.

Welcome Matt :)

You have made a very good choice of equipment. 40D is excellent and the IS kit lens is really good for the money. 55-250 was made to partner it, and likewise there is nothing out there to touch it for value.

If you want to explore photography, the other obvious area to look into on the lens front is a super-wide for landscapes etc, but I would also suggest you look at getting a decent flash gun and learn how to use it. This is often the last accessory people buy, when it should perhaps be the first - it will enhance your everyday picture taking, and also take your photography in a whole new direction. Maybe a used Canon 430EX?

Other things to consider - have a go at macro on a shoestring with a Raynox DCR-250 macro adapter (£30 off Amazon) and experiment with shallow depth of field effects (portraits?) with a nifty-fifty (50mm f/1.8 - £75).

The rest is down to you ;)

Thanks Hoppy. Hadn't really thought about the flash gun. Must admit I need to read up a bit with regard to the different flash options and why some are so much more than others
