Nifty Fifty for indoor action shots?

So today I was trying to get some action shots of our Jack Russell puppy running down the passage-way while retrieving her tennis ball, and I found that my Sigma 17-70 wasn't quite giving me a fast enough shutter speed, even at high ISO's.

So I was wondering if the Canon 50mm f/1.8 could be the answer because of its fast aperture? I appreciate it's a cheap and far-from-perfect lens but I can't really justify spending more than about £100 anyway.

Is the AF fast enough to capture a dog running at reasonably high-speed?

Dont underestimate the canon 50mm.. I ahve used it indoors at iso 6400 for basketball and its great...

Cheers for the feedback, some great shots on your website. Do you find the 50mm's AF fast and accurate then?
 
Fast glass lets more light in which allows you to use a higher shutter speed. It depends on how fast your dog is but you ll need at least a shutter speed of 1/250s or faster, and if you are taking these shots indoor then you ll also need high ISO (3200-6400).

ta :) ... fast enough.. it might hunt sometimes if your in a too dark room.. used it in dark pubs for shooting bands... a purist might say its dodgy.. all I know is that it works...
 
Cheers guys, that amazon deal is the cheapest I've seen although I might see if my local camera shop has it in stock tomorrow and will give them the business if it's only a few quid difference.
 
I found the autofocus on the 50mm 1.8 quite slow, so I got a 28mm 1.8 USM and the ultrasonic motor makes all the difference. 28mm is much more usable focal length indoors as well. Might struggle to find one for your budget though, mine was about £350.

The 50 1.8 is still a cracking lens, but I only liked to use mine when I had plenty of time to compose and focus.
 
I have a 50 f1.8 and for the money its a great lens.

The autofocus speed is pretty poor compared to any of the proper USM lenses but then they are all more expensive.

I use this lens with my 40D and was wondering why sometimes the camera seemed to stall when I asked for quick single frames.

After a bit of investigation I discovered that with the camera on high contiuous the lens limited the cameras frame rate, switch the lens to M focus and the camera is back to normal high speed.

I can only think that the way the lens feeds back focus data to the lens is too slow to allow high frame rates.

Anyone else noticed this??
