Yes
i will get a 24-50 f 2.8 this week, bought from this site. my question is would there be any benifit of having the nifty 50, apart from the weight.
they are so cheep and have a good review on here.

thanks

If you don't know what you'll be using it for; then I would say there's no benefit.

i would hold on for the time being as having a 50mm available at f2.8 in the zoom there wouldn't be much extra, play around for a couple of weeks/ months, then see

yes the 50mm f1.8 is smaller and lighter and it allows in 2 and a bit times more light than the zoom if you shot wide open, but if you buy it straight away and never use it, then it isn't a bargain.

I have one in my case - Its one of the lenses that as its pretty cheap, possibly no regrets.

I have only used mine a few times more so indoors and in confined spaces with the kids,

Definately worth a punt.

The nifty is a great lens low light and with extension AF tubes great cheapish macro, so two in one value for money.

you can also get the reversing ring but TBH i never used it that much.

Did you mean the 24-70 f/2.8L?

A fast prime is great fun to use and will allow some creative possibilities due to the extremely shallow DoF it will give you. Having said that, the 50 f/1.8 is not particularly great in the focusing department. The build quality isn't that great either.

But it's cheap, so get one and have a play :)

I have the 24-70 2.8 and I also have a nifty, and yes there are times when I prefer to use the latter instead of the former.

As the nifty is such a, relatively, cheap lens, why not buy one, see how you get on with it and, if you don't like it, sell it on. You won't lose much and at least that way you'll know whether or not it works for you to have both lenses.

Your 50 used to be your prime lens that came with your camera. All camera reviews didn't go on about dslr gadgets, screens, modes. One of the big reviews was about your prime lens, how good it was, and what apatures its sweet spot was. One of my decisions about buying my second slr was a review on its 1.8 prime lens, couldn't afford the 1.4.
Based on reviews selling slr's the 50's were extremly good optics.
Next shopping stop was a flash, none were pop up, then sometime later maybe a zoom or a 28mm, but all learned that the prime was the lens that they were most used to, the most versatile lens for any situation. People adaped to the lens and felt comfortable when you had it with you. Also made you walk around a bit to compose your shot/ learn what your camera could do without constantly trying to rummage through a bag for a lens for the right job.
It's still a great choice of focal length for a lens and recommended you get one and use it for a while.

I bought the 50mm f1.8 not long after I got my camera, and got the 24-70mm f2.8 a good while later.

Initially I was really pleased with the 50mm, but using the 2.8 zoom set to 50mm I preferred the results. OK, it's not as fast, but that didn't cause me any issues.

Like a lot of people I think I enjoyed the novelty of the f1.8 because finally I could take a photo with a blurred background! But if you look at the quality of the blur it's not very nice (5 blades, pentagons..) In the end I just wasn't using it, so gave it to a friend.

I still wanted a prime though, for low light and simple '1 lens' days out, so I was going to go for a 50mm f1.4, simply for the better build quality & smoother OOF areas.

If you can get a 2nd hand one, it's worth a play with. Depends what you need it for.
