Hi,

I've recently purchased a tripod and am interested in a bit of night-time photography.

I have a 60D and a selection on lens'

Want to take pictures of light trails from cars.

Do I need a flash or to use flash?

No flash for light trails.

i wouldnt personally for light trails..... the longer exposure means the camera has more time to absorb the light effectively so flashing would be the opposite in that respect....

i'd play around with different shutter speeds to gain a good idea of how hectic the trails can be from different shutter speeds etc....

for other pics, during the night time where the background is somewhat illuminated and your subject is basically a silhouette you can 'infill' flash to softly illuminate your subject

Matt (MWHCVT) has done a good thread on settings etc, worth a look up or pop him a PM for a link if you can't see it.

I did some with my daughter last year and had great fun, especially when the police turned up to see what we were upto ...

Well if you want to have a go a light trails, then as Andy has pointed out above I've written a guide to doing light trails, a link to that guide can be found in my signature

If you have any questions then pleased do hesitate to ask

I've already looked it up and it is really helpful. I'm trying to find a decent motorway bridge near me, one that I won't cause any trouble. I think there's one over the M1 Near the Woburn area, must have a good look! ! !

A BIG thankyou to everyone who contributed to this thread, even those who reminded me to take the pictures at night and to take the lens cap off :)

Its been a great help and the google maps locations is brilliant !!

I just wish there was a maps for all sorts of photography locations (wildlife/automotive/man-made the list could be endless !)

thanks
