Hello all,

Its my first post on here and was just looking for some advice please.

I'm a keen Carp angler and along with this I have become more interested in photography. The two seem to go together quite well, long times spent outdoors with not much going on. After I catch a fish I do like a trophy shot before slipping the carp back in the lake. I'm trying to pick up as much as I can and noticing some improvements but I am really struggling with night shots and settings, can anyone be ever so kind to help me out?

These shots are required to be taken at night using flash, I also have a light I place under the tripod which gives the area lighting where me and the fish are positioned. I have included an example of what I am trying to achieve.

What I'm using:
Nikon D5100
Nikon 35mm f1.8
Sigma 17-50mm f2.8

Regards,
Mark

Quite an easy shot to pull off. The flash does all the work.

Probably easiest in full manual mode.
Set aperture at about f/4. ISO about 400 to help a bit of ambient through but not too high so as to be noisy on a cropped body, shutter speed for those lenses at about 1/50s on a tripod, at least 1/100s if handheld. Speedlight set to auto, tilted about 45 degrees up to prevent harsh shadows.

Shoot (y)

That's where I'd start from anyway.
