i was out yesterday just before the sun set and I wanted to get some silhouette shooting of various buildings. whilst the sky still had some light on the pictures it wasnt showing up as such.

any recommendations? the only thing i can think of that i could've done better is focused on the sky rather than the building? but would that still result in a crisp line from the buildings?

Just change the exposure surely? What mode where you using? Reduce the exposure a bit and the building will darken.

Meter for the sky but focus on the building; adjust exposure compensation if necessary.

which now raises the question - whats a good meter to buy within reasonable price??

Your A200 spot meters.. that should be all the meter you need, it's then a matter of knowing how to use it. Shoot manual and chimp the result on the screen. If you were using an automatic or semi-automatic exposure mode (anything on the dial that's not "M") you would need to add some compensation to tell the camera how to adjust to get the effect you want.

Edit: Exposure and focus are two different things.. so focussing on the building is the right thing to do, you then need to meter for the result.

I was shooting on manual - the result wasnt as bad as i thought i'll post a sample or two later on when i get home. trying different settings on the same shot. getting a feel of what was and what wasnt working and trying different lenses.
