As thread title really. I've been very pleased with this as the walk about lens on my D50 & D40, but wonder if I should upgrade now I'm getting a D90 & if so what to, without spending big money.

I had this lens on D70 & a D300 and the IQ was excellent with good contrast, i sold the lens to fund a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 for the extra speed but the IQ was not as good on this as the 18-70mm. I also had a Nikon 16-85mm which had excellent IQ but its not a cheap upgrade and i not sure if the extra cash is justified just for the extra zoom range. I now have a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 which is sharp and has good IQ for the price but you'll lose a lot of the top end....and the 18-70mm has still probably got better IQ, so if you don't need the extra speed and don't want to spend lots of money on a Nikon 24-70 f2.8 then I'd keep it.

I'd debate whether the 18-70mm has better optics than the Tamron 17-50mm however I would also say that is one of the best vfm Nikon 'kit' lenses out there (punches well above its weight).

If you've been happy with it on your D40/D50 there is no reason why it will not be just as good on your D90.

I have the D90 with the 18-105VR lens. It is a great all round lens.

I never had the Nikkor AF-S 18-70 3.5-4.5G ED but I hear that is a great lens also.

If you can sell the 18-70 for more than the increase in price for the D90 to the D90 + 18-105VR kit then I would probably consider it.

You will get a longer focal length and VR.

The 18-70 DX is easily good enough for the D90 or D300 etc.

The only upgrade would be the Tamron 17-50 (for the f/2.8), although you might miss the extra 20mm although you do gain on the wide end.

Upgraded from the 18-105VR lens on my old d90 to the 18-70 and pleased I did as the results were excellent. Thought the quality and sharpness were noticeable. It did take me a while to decide between that and the tamron 17-50 2.8 and i dont think there is much to choose between them. The only lens I feel is better is the nikon 17-55 which i now have and love. £600 though second hand.
