Nikon 18-105mm VR

Am I missing out by not having tried/owned this lens?

Currently using the 18-55VR on my D40 "beater" along with the 35/f1.8, and can't help thinking that the 18-105 might make for an interesting but still economical walkabout lens for said camera. I think the 18-55 is a great lens that has given me many great pics, but the pretend focusing "ring" & lack of IF are beginning to bug me slightly.

I have the 16-85mm, which pretty much lives on my D90, and have no interest in the 18-200mm, having had a good go of one. I bought the D90 body only and have a vague feeling that I'm missing out. Am I mental?

i would say for the price its a fairly good lens.i have some nice pictures with mine.
i found it a very useful lens on my d90,not to big or heavey and with just enough reach most of the time.
its not going to compeat with any of the pro glass though,but if thats all you can afford its worth getting.

stick the 16 - 85 on the D40, its a far better lens (although theres not much wrong with the 18 - 105)

I use an 18-135 on my D50 which I use as a walk about which gives an extra bit of reach, and as yet I haven't missed the VR. Having said that I am saving for a D90 and have wondered if I should go for just the body or have a kit with the18-105 and sell my 18-135 and 18-55. Decisions decisions.

Don't much like the thought of a £400 lens on a £100 "beater" body

Anyhoo got me an 18-105 which arrived this morning, first impressions are good! Build quality seems higher than the 18-55 tho I still wouldn't want to drop it. Not loving the plastic mount, but the D40's a light camera so shouldn't stress it too much.

Physically its almost identical to the 16-85 if a bit lighter, which was a surprise. Ergonomics are a great improvement on the 18-55 too.

Better get out and take some pics with it, hadn't I?

the 105vr was a cracking walkabout lens when i had my d90.

Hmmm... been out with my 18-105/D40 and on an admittedly very bright day I got quite a lot of blown highlights in sky/whites, despite having my usual (for the D40) -1.0 exposure comp.

I know the D40 likes to overexpose, but could this be to do with the lens or is it more likely to be just as it was so bright today, for the first time in months? Annoyingly didn't have any other lens to compare with :shrug:
