Nikon 18-70 or 18-105

Done quite a lot of searches on here and the net to see what one I should go for but still cant make up my mind :|

Has anyone ever had or used both of these lenses?

The lens will be getting used for upgrade from my kit lens and just be my 'walkabout' lens.
Am also looking at getting a sigma 70-200 f2.8 and a nikon 35mm f1.8 in the near future as well. But want to upgrade from my kit lens first :)

The 18-70 is faster at the long end (3.5-4.5 vs 3.5-5.6) but obviously also has a shorter focal range.

The 18-70 is still a very popular lens and is probably a little better in IQ (I haven't got one to compare to my 18-105), but the 18-105 has the benefit of longer reach and IS.
 
Just checked and the 18-105 is f/5.3 at 70mm, so slower then the older lens, if that matters to you. I would imagine the VR will counter that for handheld shots, though.
 
save your money and keep the 18-55. It is plenty sharp and good in good light. None are low light lenses anyway. You'll get the 70-200 2.8 faster that way.

Does anyone have any recommendation on a good wide to mid range lens then?
Dont have ££££ to spend on lens would say £200-300 max per lens. So really looking at buying second hand. Am new to all this stuff so dont really know what am looking for tbh :lol:

Depends what it is you want to improve on your kit lens? Speed? Reach? Image quality?
If you're unsure, don't waste money replacing a perfectly good lens until you know what you want!

Options include Nikon 16-85VR, 18-105vr, 18-70 and the Tamron 18-50 f/2.8.

The Nikons won't offer you much more than you already have, so if it were me I'd put the cash towards a Nikon 70-300vr or that fast sigma you mentioned in your first post.

sorry but disagree - for the 30-40 quid difference upgrading to the 18-70 is well worth it.

Buy the 35mm f1.8 and zoom in and out by walking toward or away from your subject. ;)

Seriously, going from the 18-55 to the 18-70 isn't going to change the photos you're taking very much, although I appreciate that having the flexibility of the zoom can be useful. A short prime will force you to move around more and try different framing though.

Agree. I started on kit lens then had the 18-105 with my d90, and then went for 18-70. I found the IQ to be very good, and 2nd hand these are going for around £100. The 18-70 I think is one of the best value lenses out there.

The Tamron 17-50 and 28-75 are also very good and around £200 SH too.
