will the nikon 200-400 f4 work with a 1.7tc also a 2.0tc
will it still auto focus ok
will pic IQ be bad ??

It will take both tc's you mention but whether it will auto focus will depend on the body your using. The 200-400 isnt that great with even a 1.4tc never mind the 1.7tc or 2xtc. I would only want to use either on that lens in an emergency.

I very rarely use my 200-400 with a 1.4 TC let alone the 1.7 or 2x TC. I've recently picked up a d7200 for further away subjects. It's a great lens, quite sharp and a versatile zoom too.

I tried every thing… and I was not happier than using this fabulous
lens on my D800E. The 36.3 MP are allowing surprising crop.

200-400 works reasonably well on its own, not too bad with a 1.7 but AF takes a hit ... I wouldn't be happy using it with a 2x.

I've recently read this review from Richard Peters about the 200-400 with 1.4 TC. Having read about teleconverters on this lens I have not used the 1.4tc as much as I did on the 300 f2.8 (that said I'm already at 400mm so not as much of a need). The purchase of a d7200 was also for use as a remote camera but doubles for longer focal length with its equivalent 600mm FoV.

As Mark says, I wasn't that happy with the 1.4TC11 on the 200-400.
