Nikon 24-120 F4 VR or Nikon 28-300?

Personally I've had both and found the 24-120 to be a better lens, and I found 24mm handier than 28mm, the 28-300 is a big beast and I didn't think the IQ was as good hence it going back.

I am not quite sure why you own a D810 and plan to use these lenses!!!
Your most important investment is the lens (that will possibly stay with
you a long time) as the bodies are upgraded by makers regularly.
IMO, the right direction would be a D750 with a budget for better lenses.

The 24-120 gets sold as a "kit" with the D810, its a fine lens and in my experience as good as most of the 24-70 f2.8 options (albeit without the f2.8)

D810 + the new 24-124 f4 is a great combination ... are you thinking the older 24-120 Kodiak?

True I got the 24-120mm with my D750, I already own the 24-70mm but use the 24-120mm for a 1 lens holiday kit and as said above it's a great lens, granted it's not as good as the 24-70mm but as a holiday lens it's fantastic.

The lens is a bargain as a kit, especially bought from Panamoz... wouldn't pay the £700odd UK price though.

Actually, there (were) three! First one was a duffer but filled a gap. Second one was a lot improved with some marginal barrel distortion. The third incarnation is ace! My go to, walk about optic.
Personally, I never go beyond a 5x zoom range. Every zoom is a compromise in design over a prime. With so many corrective actions and elements something has to give - hence my limit 5x zoom!

Got the old 24-120 variable aperture VR zoom as the kit lens with my D700 and upgraded it to a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 (and yes, it was an upgrade in terms of IQ although I did lose VR.) When I had the D800, I had a play with the newer f/4 24-120 VR and upgraded to that and now use it on my D750 as an almost fixture. Could possibly be tempted by a 24-70 VR but since I'm not a fan of shallow DoF, there's little real point for me. IF I needed the extra stop, I might be more tempted but since all my kit is a want not a need, the f/4 option works best for me.
