Yes
Had the first maternity studio session yesterday with the 24-70. It is just phenomenal compared to most other lenses I own. Flawless and amazingly sharp.

No point to the thread, just wanted to share my rather sad over-excitement and contentment.............. :bonk:

The 24-70 and a D700 are what I strive towards, day after day after day after day after.......

Yes, got one with my camera last week. Very impressed - once I have got comfortable with the camera I'll have a right good go with it.

I worked 50 hours overtime a month for 4 months !!!

Result.....

D700 + 24-70 + AFS50f/1.4G + D300 (for Mrs C's Christmas present)

and....

RSI + felt ill for 2 months :(

BUT

I finished yesterday for my annual holiday and I don't go back till 2nd week in January so I actually have time to take some pictures and finish my studio.....

The 24-70 is LOVELY, I too wanted the 70-200 but just could not manage another couple of months overtime and bought the AF 80-200 f2.8 second hand which is still nice but not quite the same.

I have almost a perfect setup which consists of D300 with 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200 2.8's. Just need to somehow save up for D700 although I have no idea how (except for a lottery win).

Brilliant lenses all of them worth the exorbitant money they command.

The D300 is still a great camera. The D700 comes up second hand for £1400 regularly so its a case of finding another £600-650ish. Small percentage of the £5000 cost of the 3 lenses :)

So, by your own admission and lust are you saying that your "D300 with 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200 2.8's" are not perfect :p

Listen to Cowasaki, I think he's still suffering the pains of this lust. It's never ending.

As for the 24-70 AF-S .... I have one that's in 30~40 pieces and I may be tempted to sell it for the right price :p .. it's one sexy piece of glass. Of course, the ones that work, that is

One day just one day i will own this lens !!!!!!:nuts::nuts:

I'd keep it for more than "just one day" if I was you :p

My DX 17-55 f2.8 is similarly gifted and worth the £1,000+ it commands, but slight snag is... for headshots etc. people keep asking for the images to be 'blurred' as it's too sharp and renders each pore :bang::bang::bang:

Shuttup shuttup shuttup shuttup shuttup

Am saving for a D700 + 24-70 at the moment and it is driving me nuts.

Afternoon Wail,

Yes very costly business this camera kit lust thing

I didn't mention the Sigma 20mm f1.8 with Heliopan CPL, the other filters or the studio stuff plus the two tripods. Its just a never ending list. I will be getting the new GPS too when we can sort it :) I think next year I will be spending far less though and concentrating on using it more than buying it. I would love to save for a week in New York or some other breath taking location. Your neck of the woods has some sights, you should share them with us :rules:

I know mate I keep trying to save but end up spending it on other things. Next year though is when I will start to do my O/T.

Well it's either D700 or SB900 (with D300) to make it perfect for me.

Am saving for a D700 + 24-70 at the moment and it is driving me nuts.

I heard a whisper that the 12-24 and 24-70 were being upgraded like the 70-200 was but not seen anything else pointing that way.

The SB900s are excellent though, I've got three of them and I still want more, but can't justify any more expenditure!

They're not disposable, you can fit new batteries in them

Got to be the D700 as the first purchase. The SB900s are excellent though, I've got three of them and I still want more, but can't justify any more expenditure!

Trouble is that I am not as patient as cowasaki is with saving money.

I'm note patient either, I bought each item in turn as I got paid each month other than the D700 which took me 6 weeks during which I sold a laptop and a few other bits and pieces.

Whenever you want the GP-1, just let me know. The prices here don't change much ;)

Do you really think your spending / buying is going to slow-down! That's what I thought too, but I have to let you in on a little secret .. you will always find an excuse for wanting that new bit of glass / gear / etc.

.....

Well it's either D700 or SB900 (with D300) to make it perfect for me.

Repeat after me, if you may ...

"Dee 700 ... Dee 700 ... Dee 700"

Repeat that 10 times a day and your nightmares will go away :p

Am not too sure why would they want to update the 24-70 AF-S? The 70-200 had a new VR mechanism put in .. what do they want to do with the 24-70? May be fix the field-curvature issue, not that its' bothered me. But I was bothered by the extension of the barrel when zooming in / out. I would have much preferred if the lens barrel didn't extend; but not something worth going back to the drawing boards over ?!

I want it as soon as I can. The money will be waiting in 9 days time !!

It will have to! I would still be happily using my D200 etc if the overtime had not been there but it was and I decided to work it virtually as a one off. I will buy a few extra things but I pretty much have what I want/need now. The 12-24 would be nice to replace the 20mm f1.8 eventually BUT that is a wonderful lens and I would probably want to keep it anyway so it would make it a big purchase.

It was a comment from a Nikon rep, there was not a lot wrong with the old 70-200 either but they changed that. I suppose they might upgrade the 24-70 to fix those perceived faults but in my opinion they would be better spending their development money on a new AFS 85mm and 20mm plus maybe a 200-300/400 f4

I'd seriously doubt that either the 24-70 or 14-24 are refreshed; both were released only recently while the 70-200 had been around for some time before and was 'known' to have some 'issues' when used on FX sensors.

Along with my Mrs ;)

Nope, no chance. Nikon do like to put out odd lenses and refresh things that don't need refreshing, but neither of these will be replaced within the next 5 years.

Full Frame + 24-70 + 70-200 are the Holy Trinity and worth every penny pound

Totally disagree... but only because I haven't got that set-up.....')

(*Specialman goes green with envy...**)

Lucky buggers. I'll just have to 'make do' with my D2x, 17-50mm, 12-24, 80-200 and 60mm for now.....

I did think it unlikely and hope they put their energy into a few alternatives :)

I'm hoping for the 24-70mm to be one of my next lenses. I'm off to Canada next summer, so am hoping to take this lens as a walkabout.

Funnily enough although I use the 24-70 lots for work I can't say I'm a big fan of it. Personally I find when focusing using an off centre focal point the sharpness is not good. It's one of the few lenses where focus and recompose works better for me than selecting an outer focal point.

For me I think it's superb in the middle but not so good off-centre.

Of course I might have had a poor quality copy. As it's recently been stolen I guess I'll be able to compare the replacement to the old one and then I'll find out

For those who want a lens that's just as good and somewhat cheaper try and find a decent copy of a 28-70 F2.8! Granted I haven't used a 24-70 but I can't see it being massively better!

I could of course be wrong........ :D

I have another Nativity on Friday (30 + 3-4 year old little darlings) and a funeral in the afternoon.
I shall use this lens for both jobs, would normally use the 70-200 at funerals but this week it will stay in the car.
No photographs after the coffin is carried into the chapel which is a good point.
While helping my mate with his narrow-boat yesterday, I took this with the 24-70.
