had a search but couldnt find anything similar.
okay after returning my d700 and 24-70,imlooking at getting another d700,but have been looking at lenses again:nono:
i have to pick one lens to go with my d700,this will most likely be theonlylense i have for 1 year.though imay keep my 50mm 1.8d.
which do you think would be the best alrounder/most useful as a first lens.i willl probably buy the othere lens i dont pick next year.

The 24-70 is going to be better if you just want something for everyday use. I prefer the 70-200 for portraits but wouldn't find much use for it on a trip around town.
 
I reckon you'll get more everyday use from the 24-70. My 70-200 only gets used for my Equestrian stuff. Always reach for the standard zoom for everything else.
 
I had the same dilemma when I got back into Nikon a few months ago, and opted for the 24-70 first. Much more versatile that the 70-200vr. As it happens, I still havent bought the 70-200, but a 50 f/1.4, and 85 f/1.8 and a 105 macro.

im mainly shoot people (family & kids).
i just wasnt sure if i would miss the reach having just a 24-70 though.im going from a crop sensor to full frame aswell,and for the short time i had my d700 noticed the differnce using the 24-70 over my d90s 18-105 lens.
 
If you are shooting people, then Id still say 24-70. You dont need long reach as threy wont be candids, you can get close to them without issue. Its easier to comunicate with them when you at a closer distance instead of several feet away at 200mm. The 24-70 is a lot lighter and smaller, so easier to carry around chasing kids outside, and doesnt look quite so daunting to those in front of the lens.

If you feel you need extra reach, you could get an 85mm or 135mm or something like that in time.
 
I have to echo the previous comments. I own a D700, 24-70 and 70-200. I love the 70-200 in specific circumstances. But for a general purpose lens, including people shots, I'd use the 24-70 all day - and I CAN use it all day, because it balances nicely with the D700, whereas you need to be a weightlifter to use the 70-200 handheld for an extended period. Either way, you win, as both are great lenses, but if I had to pick only one, it would be the 24-70.
