Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S has anyone got this lens, thinking of getting this and selling my Nikon 28-70mm 2.8 lens,
Jessops have it in stock for £1349.00 but will price it for £1200 so its a good deal.
Any thoughts on this

Bloody great lens but aren't you better off buying say, the 17-55 which will be much cheaper and more suited to your DX body? If your planning to upgrade to FX then it's a no brainer!

Unless you know the OP's photographic foibles, can't see how you can say that the 17-55 would be much more suited? 24-70mm is a great portrait range on a D body and seeing as the OP is looking to trade a 28-70mm lens then it's an indication that he's happy with the focal length.

As for the 24-70mm I've only just got one, but it's stonking! If you can afford it, get one, though I think £1200 is a bit steep still, the problem is finding a store with one in stock. Try LCE in Bristol, that's where I got mine.

Thanks TheBionicDan, but i find the 17-55 just doesn't give me enough scope, 28-70m was a good range for me, thats why i fancy this lens.

NorthernNikon what price did u pay for yours if you don't mind me asking

IMHO £1200 is too steep. You could get them for £899 December 2008 and thats about what its worth.

Nice lens, big heavy b****r though. I like it optically, hate the bulk and the stupid Darth Vader helmut hood :nuts:

That is a big difference, will just have to keep looking around then, i heard prices were going up in April too.

I have one, and its far and away my most used lens. I think its well worth the money and unforunatley with the price rises £1,200 is the best deal you're likely to find

Until I sold mine, it was the most used lens I had, and what a fantastic baby it is :)

Mine had an issue with front focusing when at 24mm f/2.8 up to f/4. This was resolved by Nikon, but it took them almost 6 weeks to sort out. Mind, mine was a very early-release copy, I got it November (or was it December) 2007. So, this issue of front focusing may have been resolved.

I only sold it as I wanted to give "only primes" a go; and have now put my liking to get another one. Though prices of a new one has gone up, I paid just around £1,000 back in 2007. £1,200 now is :shrug:

It was beautiful on my D200, D2Xs, D300, D40 and D700.

Hi David i've been looking at the 24-70 tried it the other day on a D700 and i wish i had'nt it was awesome:love: Unfortunately i cannot justify the outlay at the moment:'( So if you do pull the trigger i'd be very interested in your
28-70 if you decide to sell it.

I'd happily part with mine - I was trying to trade the hefty b****r for a 300mm f/4 AF-S, but didn't get much luck.

Maybe I'll put it in the Classifieds again.

Dunno - but I'm not trying to solicit offers.

I'm going to be spending two weeks in Scotland over April, need to decide if I want to lug a honking great lens on 20 mile hikes, or go light with a couple of primes.
 
Beautiful lens and worth the £960 I paid for it in late December 08. It is very heavy but you soon get used to it and the quality of the images it produces is totally worth it.

I have to find a way to filter-out and block anything related to this lens ... what was I thinking when I sold it :cuckoo:
 
A few of us have mentioned the size / weight - I wish Nikon would tone them down a bit.

I know a lot of folks like to bang on about "build quality", but for those of us who look after our kit, I'd happily take the optics in a kit lens chassis with 2/3rd the weight and a bit more plastic and a less mentally deranged hood :)
 
Interesting to note that people find it big and heavy. I've just flogged my 1D3 and had the L 24-70 on that. I'd say that the Nikkor 24-70 (which I have on a D700) isn't as big and heavy as the Canon one, or at least it doesn't feel it to me. I actually think it's quite compact for a constant 2.8 lens.

Anyway, I like it a lot - it's very fast, quiet and sharp. Not sure if it's worth the current price tag, but unfortunately that's what it is (and I think it's going to go up again soon).

I agree, I invested in a D3 and the 24-70 last August, before that my main body was a 1DmkI and the L series 24-70 hardly ever came of it, the weight of that combo compared to a D3 felt considerably heavier.

Skin tones are remarkable with the Nikkor.

What say you folks about the barrel distortion? I seem to have to do alot of corrections :thinking:

Canon 24-70L = 950g
Nikon AF-S 24-70 = 900g

So the Canon is a tad heavier, though I doubt you'd notice that little difference in practice.

Canon 1D Mk III + 24-70L = 2285g (1335+950)
Nikon D700 + 24-70 = 1974g (1074+900)

The Nikon combo is noticeably lighter, but the biggest difference is between the bodies, not the lenses. Perhaps that's not surprising, given that the 1D3 is much more like the D3 than the D700?

The D3 is a very light body isn't it, first time I picked it up I was very surprised.

To be fair though even when I had the 1DmkI and 24-70 I never complained about the weight, not that I carried it out on safari but I've done long shoots with it and not had a problem. I always slung the strap over my shoulder when having a wonder around quieter places or when waiting for clients to be ready.

How nice it would be on my Camera :)

It is a really good lens and great on a DX Crop ideally suited to anyone thinking that FF might be for them in a few months / years.
 
i used it on a d300 dx and then ff when i got my d700 and loved it on both but i do prefer it on a ff camera as i appreciate the extra width more than the reach

Just out of interest, why did you want to trade "the beast"? Was it because you wanted something a little wider?

I bought this lens 3 days before my D3 arrived, so had a wee play on the D300 whilst waiting. It really is an exceptional lens that ticks all the right boxes and it was as good on DX as it is on FX, it's one lens I don't think I'll ever part with and is currently perma-bonded to the D3.
As said previously, it is heavy, but it's a "good" heavy to think of a better phrase ;)

Buy it, enjoy it :D

Awesome lens, the focus speed, accuracy, sharpness and color is second to none - many say it's sharper than the primes. When I've used it for portraits (85/1.4 is first choice), with studio flash, the detail is incredible. Great focal length range on your body too.

Cannot fault it :¬)

Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 AI-S

Both are amazing close up and at infinity.

Your 28-75 arrived today :D

Must admit I really do prefer the build quality and cosmetics of the older lenses, and the crinkly black finish and the aperture ring. I prefer the shorter and more stubby lens barrel over the 24-70.

I don't think I'm going to be giving much up optically going from the 24-70 to the 28-70 at this stage from a few quick shots.

Be interested to see what you think about your 24-70 when you get it, having gone the other way.

Right now I have both the 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S and the 24-70 f/2.8 AF-S :lol:
