I picked up one of these today, great condtion at a pretty good price. It is not the D series but it does have CPU contacts etc works in all modes.

I cannot find any information on it, the markings are Made in Japan. Nikkor 1.2.8

Anyone have any ideas why these ones are so much cheaper than the D series?
 
The D series take full advantage of 3D matrix metering, which may be more relevant to longer focal lengths more likely to be used with flash. They're also better designed for manual focusing, which Nikon thought would fall by the wayside with their first series of AF Nikkors.
 
The best 28mm is the Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AI-S.

Nikon's primes are not that much cop in AF... the 35/2 and the 24mm are reasonable. The 20mm is a shocker (on full frame).. the 28mm AF or AF-D has always been the runt of the wide prime litter.
