nikon 300 2.8 lens

Factor in additional costs of a big tripod and head as that beast will weigh a ton.

It seems rather a lot for an AF-I version, bearing in mind it's between 14 and 18 years old

yes! thats what I thought...I had a old 2.8 manual one of these once, loved the glass, but wanted a auto version.. Thats why I asked about this lens, dont know
much about it?? does this one fit in between the manual & new version VR ...
I can't find any info, on other models ..I can see with this lens it has focus buttons on front of lens, some haven't...

konastab01,mostly hide work..(birds). thanks mark...

My 300mm f2.8 is the version just before that one and I wouldn't swap it for anything, it's a lovely lens, so it doesn't have vr and is a bit bigger than newer versions but it still gives amazingly sharp images and can be handheld with ease if required

is it any good with 1.4 converter? my manual one was ...mark

It always shocks me how much people are willing to pay for old and very well used glass. Could you not get a brand new Sigma 300mm F2.8 for not a million miles away from this price?

I paid less than that for my AF-S version (which has super fast focus, unlike the AF-I)

The 400mm AF-I had AF-S speed focusing, the 300mm AF-I was transistional for Nikon, and while - as always with Nikon 300mm glass, the optical performance should be excellent, this is not going to have good focusing performance.
