Nikon 300mm AFS F4

Does anyone have any info on the above lens? Do you find it is a good lens, and one you wouldn't grow out of quickly? I really wanted something with a bit more reach like a 400, but Nikon don't seem to do those at accessible price points compared to Canon. Is the sharpness good? How does it go with the 1.4 converter?

As sharp as a sharp thing that has just been sharpened

Works with the 1.4TC giving you 420mm f5.6, which you will not notice is fitted, still works with the 1.7TC giving you 520mm f6.7, AF slightly effected, but quality still good.

Both with 1.7TC @ f7.1, and both at ISO3200

Good question Lawrence I'm thinking that this will be the lens and t/c I go for (not till next year though). Super sharp images there Martyn has probably confirmed my choice is correct.

AFS 300 f4? Yeah works lovely. Use it all the time.

Nikon don't make a 400mm? Yes they do, a 80-400 is still available.... and did you know they also USED to make a 400 5.6 too? You might be able to find one of those if you hunt around, assuming thats what you are alluding to.

Other than that, the 400 2.8 is lovely!
