Sharp wide open, fast to focus, works great with the TC14EII, and works just as well with the TC17EII, it retains auto focus with both TC,s.

Superb lens, great image quality, nice weight, mine got a lot of use for birding with the TC14EII, until I got the 200-400VR, however it is my lens of choice if I want to travel light.

Just about sums it up, I wish i`d have kept mine, but there you go............:bang:

Aren't these near impossible to buy though? It seems that everywhere has them 'on back order'.

To echo the above though, superbly sharp, great AF and awesome colours :thumbs:

I have one of these and at first I just couldn't get to grips with it. I now use it on a D300 with a X2 converter and I am quite pleased with the results. At the moment I just do not have the time to get out there and practice, all the faults were user error and not the lens.
As above, if you find one grab it.

Morning,

I just picked a new one with 1.4 TC around six weeks ago and have used it a few times since. Awesome piece of glass and I would certinally recomend it. Quality build, easy to handle and as mentioned works great with the 1.4 II T.C. Simply will never leave it at home now.

As mentioned I have not had it long but have had a few ops to use it;

If you dont mind here are a couple of examples;

WITH 1.4 TC

They are leagues apart

the 300mm AF-S is stunning, best lens I have used and thats saying something (Better IMO than a 70-200 VR)

Stunning lens - even wide open - super fast AF-S - some examples from me:

Its without question a better lens than the 70-200 VR, especially when you put a 1.4x TC on it.

Even though I do really need to be shifting all my Nikon gear I'm having a hard time letting this (and my AI-S primes) go :'(

Thanks for all your comments and examples,looks like i will have to start saving.

Some of mine - all with a 1.4x TC:

The 1.4x and 1.7x TC's work well well.

Thanks puddleduck lovely pics.Really cant wait to get this lens.Just another question the lens doesnt have vr,is this an issue and whats it like with handheld shots?

What can I say that's not already been said. Mint lens and the 1.4x t/c has no issues at all. I did pay over the odds for mine a few months ago at £999 but you just couldn't get them anywhere.

Nope no VR. VR is just an excuse for people to be lazy and develop poor technique ;)

I usually use a beanbag to rest the lens on, but obvious airshows are handheld.

I can do 300mm no problem handheld, 420mm on a good day, and never get far with 510mm with the 1.7x handheld.

All of the images above are selling points for this lens. Thanks for sharing:thumbs:

Got a 300f4 recently and these were shot last weekend in poorish light with a 1.4TC

whats it like with handheld shots?

Here's a shot of an actress friend of mine performing outdoors in January in pouring rain - 6400 ISO -1/50th sec @ f/4 - EXIF is intact so you can check! It's all about technique!

Its a good lens and works well as mentioned above with 1.4x and 1.7x TC's.

Obviously with the usual caveats of TC use!

Better than the 70-200VR? The focus isn't quite as fast IMHO, but its almost as fast.

Lets put it this way, these guys are doing about 150mph straight towards me in dimish light and it copes with it!

Basically to get anything better, given the need for 300mm, you'd have to buy the Nikon 300 2.8 or maybe the Nikon 200-400 - both a shed load more money.

No VR but who cares.

Well worth the price tag, if you can find one.

Some more great images,youve definately persuaded me to buy this lens.Anyone know if Nikon will be dropping their prices in the near future,ie is it worth waiting a while?
