i currently shoot football, and am using a D3 with an old Nikon 300 f2.8 AF.
It focuses a bit show, and i find im missing alot of shots because it just isnt fast enough?or am i expecting too much from such an old lens? i do however really like the image quality.
Been looking at the VR version, is it alot quicker? image Q better? worth the pennies??

Thanks in advance
Chris

I can't comment about the 300mm, as I've only used the AF-S version, but the difference in focus speed between the 80-200 AF-D and 70-200 VR AF-S is very noticeable

i know, i too have gone from an old 80-200 to a 70-200 vr and can see a difference. Just dont know weither its worth forking out 4k for a new 300mm f2.8vr

If you can find one for sale!

Focus speed is amazing on the AFS II. I've done a comparison between this and the Sigma 120-300 and the Sigma doesn't even come close.

yes thats true, its hard to find an older version AFS-II

maybe my best bet is to hire one first and see the difference

All the AF-S versions focus at the same speed, and all are much faster than AF or AF-I.

So on focus speed you'll see a big difference. Optically you won't - all Nikon 300mm lens are superb optically.
