Hi,

I m considering one of these lenses. The last 35mm I have owned was the Nikon 35mm f1.8 and I was very pleased with it. I had a go at the Nikon 35mm f1.4 in my local camera store and again I was pleased with the results. Lots of reviews claim that the Sigma is even better than the Nikon and specially for its price. Is it that good that I should ignore the Nikon?

My Sigma 50mm f1.4 was amazing but I had a bad experience with my Sigma 85mm f1.4 and replaced it with the Nikon 85mm f1.4.

This lens will replace my 24-70mm so it's going to be attached on my camera 80% of the time
 
The Sigma is indeed very very sharp. A good lens, I like it a lot.

If you use a lot of bokeh, you may want to compare diligently, as the Sigma's bokey is, in lack of a better word, IMO a bit analytical, clean - maybe owed to the sharpness? I don't know. It is not the softest and smoothest bokeh I've seen.

Also, if you decide to buy the Sigma, I'd suggest to buy it in a store where you can test a sample before buying, because I've seen front focus issues, or infinite not being sharp at the infinite setting (but before that). Most samples will probably be good, but IMHO it's better to be able to ensure this in a store before buying.

I would consider the sigma. My next buy is likely to be a 35mm and I think I will be going for the sigma.

Bokeh wise I beleave the nikon is ment to be slughtly nicer, with reviews saying the sigma is rather noisy.

Where as the sigma is sharper, less CA,faster focusing & cheaper.

I would buy fron somewhere you can return easily though, theres still lots of reports of sigma having issues.
 
The first copy of the sigma I received was off-focus. Just a tad, but enough for me to notice. The second one is perfect, to my eye at least, I don't really do all the technical testing. It's a sweet little lens, it is heavier than it looks for sure, but I think it's nicely balanced on the D800. I sold my 24-70 after buying it, that's saying something as I really like that lens. It's just not being used with the 35, and 85 1.8G I got since. I'm using all primes atm.
 
Heard a few reports of the Sigma focus jamming in extreme heat, mainly abroad granted but it does raise some doubts over the internal build quality.
 
Good job I didn't bring mine to Turkey then, and also that I live in Ireland :D

I did bring my 85 1.8 though, and it worked beautifully over there for some streetshooting in the city.

Has anyone tried the dock for the new sigma lenses yet?

I've just grabbed the last one for Nikon on amazon, see how it goes. Whether it's just a gimmick or not. It'll be interesting for me to see how on-point my 35 lens really is.

That's the one thing that annoys me about Sigma, QC. It's 50:50 with their products IMO

It's seems that I am going down the same route, Primes.
 
I'm using the Nikon 35G 1.4, nice lens, weather sealed etc which I don't think the Sigma is. Really though you can't go wrong with either. I'd probably buy the Sigma and then use the change for something else.
 
Ok, I have been to my local camera store and had a play with both. I have to say that the Sigma has impressed me a lot. The feel of the lens, the sharpness, the weight etc which I think IMO felt a lot better than the Nikon version. To be fair to the Nikon it did not have any front/back focus issue where with the Sigma I had to use the micro adjustment at +10 to get the sharpest results. Not complaining at all as its about half price.

So now, attached to my D800 is a lovely Sigma 35mm F1.4 and I have to say what an amazing combo. Its replacing my 24-70mm F2.8 so probably it will take me a bit of time to get used to zooming in and out with my feet :D
