Interested to know if there is any difference quality wise between pics taken with these two lenses aside from max aperture. Should I save myself cash by going for 1.8 if extra speed not needed.
Currently shooting D200 but looking to go FF longterm

Cheers

Can't compare as I haven't used the 1.8 but the 1.4 is amazing...love it, bought it online from the US and save myself about a third on prices here, but i think UK prices are pretty similar to US ones.

It is the best investment I got last year, and I got D300s last year too!

My first week of my 365 was dedicated to it, so give you a good idea of the shots. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pommi/sets/72157623112059730/

Nice pics. Wish you had said these were taken with the 1.8 version. :'(
Maybe someone on here has used both
;)

Have the 1.4 AFS and think it is better than the 1.8.

Is it £160 or so better? Dont know. If I lost all my kit I would buy another 1.4 though, but if I was strapped for cash a 1,8 would be fine.

I only own the f/1.8 version but have used the f/1.4 (and the manual focus etc f/1.2). IMO, apart from the marginal extra speed of the wider aperture lenses, there's very little to seperate them on image quality, especially in the real world at f/2 or narrower. Yes, the f/1.4 (and even more so, f/1.2) give a much shallower DoF but it can be too shallow to use. The extra cost of the faster lens(es) is (again, IMO) better spent elsewhere.

I have the AF-S 50mm f/1.4G lens and I'd imagine that the optics are similar between the two f/1.4 models - differences being in the AF functions...
Really nice lens, very sharp and lovely and bright.
I use it all the time wide-open for the Wall-Portraits I have to do of all the officers in the headquarters here...

Have the f/1.8 D - good buy for under £100. Heard the f/1.4 D is poor wide open when shooting anywhere near contre jour.
