Nikon 50mm on D5000 - will it AF or not?

Hi,

Can anyone confirm if the Nikon 50mm f1.8D lens will auto-focus on a Nikon D5000?

I think its manual focus only but not 100% sure.

Would it be worth spending extra on the 35mm f1.8 AFS against using the 50mm manually? If I was going to get the 50mm it would be mostly landscape and night-shots so taking the time to manually focus wouldn't be an issue really.

Also, is the 35mm as good as the 50mm or worse?

I have both the 50mm and the 35mm and they are both great. The 35 mm will give you a " normal " lens with the crop and IMHO is a good start on primes.

I'm still just looking but as a previous Sony user I don't have much experience of Nikon lenses. I had looked at the 18-105 VR but I have found a lot of negative feedback about the build quality and plastic connection. I had read of a lot of D90 kit lenses showing errors ...........all put down to that lens and the build quality.

The 50mm and 35mm are the next reasonable Nikon lenses I have found to use...........or just wait and save more. But I'm not sure what would be a good lens to use for walk about and general use with good sharp results but not blowing my limit, which at the present time is about £170. More if I have a goal to go for.

Any advice on good Nikon VR lens would be helpful.

OH and I spotted 24-120 on the bay here...

But I don't know if this is a good lens to start and keep initially with the Nikon till I find my feet and learn more or the Nikon range, or bargains.

Get yourself an 18-70 mm AF-S off eBay for around 120 quid. Best bang for buck Nikon lens you can buy and it pairs very well with the D5000. I doubt you'll find a bad word said about them on here.

Just noticed you wanted VR....the 18-70 doesn't have it but at those focal lengths its not really necessary. It has a max aperture of f/3:5 too so reasonably fast.

Thanks..............I do know the 18-70 from the D70/80 and it is a cracking lens. I may look for that on the bay. Thanks
