Nikon 55-200 VR sharpness

I have a Nikon D90 body and a Nikon 55-200 VR lens, I was messing around today with the camera set to portrait mode with flash, and I couldnt get the shot in focus, both in M and AF. It looked good through the viewer but when reviewed it not sharp at all. Is there a way of testing the sharpness of an image/camera.

I will post images once people have given me some clues to see if I can test it somehow.

Was it hand held? if so what was the shutter speed?

If it was definitely in focus its probably motion blur.

Please post the exif data, and tell whether the shot was handheld or tripod mounted,and whether vr was on.

Should be clues in there somewhere, I have this lens and its plenty sharp, possibility of bad example though of course.

Exif reads:

1/60th
ISO 100
F 4.5

Although I'm only a beginner myself, doesn't your shutter speed break the 'Golden Rule'??
You shouldn't select a shutter speed slower than your focal length.

1/60th simply isn't quick enough.. you're shooting at 135mm, so should have been at around 1/150th or quicker. You've plenty of room to bump up the ISO to get you a quicker SS, as you're only shooting at ISO100.
 
Shot on a D90 with 1.5 x crop factor, at 135mm, you'd be looking for approx 1/200 or faster shutter speed without vr, or about 1/125 with VR, at least.

Try experimenting again....if you can't achieve these shutter speeds, up your ISO and then speed up your shutter.

Pretty certain this is down to your shutter speed :)
 
You just reminded me to give this lens a whirl... Believe it or not I've not tested my 55-200mm yet since buying it a month ago. Hopefully no focusing issues with mine!

I think I'd agree, the ear seems reasonably sharp compared to the eyes. Are you sure you didnt move the camera to the left slightly and shifted focus onto the ear rather than the eye.
