Nikon 55-200mm lens or Sigma Equivalent

I have recently bought a Nikon D40. I am looking to buy a second lens and have been looking at the Nikon 55-200mm with VR. Is this a decent enough lens or should I be looking at the Sigma equivalent?

I have been into photography for a while but having previously owned a Fuji S9600, the changing of lenses is all new to me so any advice would be much appreciated. :)
 
I have the non VR version of the Nikon 55-200 and find it to be great. Not tried the sigma so can't comment. You won't be disapointed with the Nikkor lens.
 
Its hard to fault the Nikkor for the money.

I've not used the Sigma - but I'd be very surprised if it could outperform the Nikkor in this instance.
 
i've got the vr version of nikor 55-200

its a great lens for the money and produces good results
 
Thanks guys - I think i'm pretty much decided on the Nikon 55-200 after looking at reviews, it does seem to be good value for money

Also I can get same lens from here but if you read further down in the item condition and warranty section it says its refurbished by Nikon - would you trust it:

The two on Amazon that you linked to are the same lens. Personally I'd steer clear of the refurbished eBay one as it's not much of a saving on a new version from a trusted UK seller. Plus there's always the chance it'll get caught by customs and it'll end up costing you more.
 
Yea I was quite wary - nearly hit buy to and then decided to read the smaller print.

So i'd be ok just going with the cheaper of the 2 on amazon then
 
Anyone know any good places to buy the Nikon 55-200mm VR for under £180?

I know I postedlinks to 2 on amazon but they are third party sellers and don't trust them as much.
 
Ye but what do you reckon to them being third party rather than directly through amazon - are they normally alright?
 
ive ordered a few things from amazon (inc. 3rd parties) and they've always been good, however not ordered camera gear? have they got protection in place for dodgy 3rd party sellers? (like paypal protection)
 
Theres always Onestopdigital selling the Nikon 55-200mm VR Lens for £147.71 they aren't UK based but will refund charges if get any when it sent over here.
