OK guys, I know you have told me already that I really should only use TC's with primes, but I do have method to this idea.:naughty:

I originally started with the 16-85 and 70-300 in my camera bag. I am now the proud owner of the 70-200 f/2.8.
My next idea is to purchase the 1.7 TC which may allow me to also purchase the 24-70 f/2.8.

How?

Well, I have approximately 600 quid saved up, and if I sell the 16-85 and 70-300, I should be close to affording the 1.7 TC and 24-70. Does this all sound good?:)

My only concern is the performance of the 70-200 f/2.8 with the TC. If it performs as good as the 70-300 performs, then I have no worries. I am hoping that it will perform better.

What are your thoughts on this?

Thank you.

Ok i have just sold my 70-200 VR and 1.7 TC on here
I have to be honest and say the 2 together can be very hit and miss.
F4.8 does cause some blurred pics if you are use to f2.8.
I also found the bokeh was awful if trying to take a close up.
I did find the 1.7 worked better with VR turned off, a tripod was used and the light was good.
If i was to be honest i would say dont buy one for use on a 70-200 as you might find it stays in the bag as you will not know if it is worth the risk of using.

Don't forget about the spanner in the works new X2 version 3 tc coming out on the 29th of this month. Although it's gonna cost £450 ish, supposedly it is very very good from what scraps i've found so far.

Raider is right, that combo is not particularly good at all - well, you get an image when you press the button (and for some thats good enough) but you are really knocking the quality off of a thousand quid lens by doing it.

A 70-300VR second hand would be a better bet!

Bear in mind you will not be able to use the TC with the 24-70mm.

The 70-200mm with a TC even the 2X will be better than your 70-300mm, though it is probably best to go with the 1.7.

I have the 2X and love it for when I need the extra reach.

Don't forget that this new TC only allows AF on about 12 lenses from nikons range, all high end 2.8 and f2 teles

The 1.4 works much better than the 1.7.
I wouldn't put a 1.7 in front of my 70-200 (well, I did and I gave it up as a bad job). The 1.4 is very good though and mine is an old AF1 version of the 1.4, not the newer version. I might be lucky and have just got a pair that work well together - but on the 300 f2.8 the TC is pants. I was going to sell the 500 f4 and just make do with the 300 and 1.4 (as being close enough for what I need)....but the 300 and 1.4 combo doesn't work as well as I had hoped. Marginally acceptable, but not the pure, crisp images I had been led to believe.

I think a built ,lens is always going to be better than a loose combo. Have you tred a 300 f4? Get one of those used and try a 1.4 on it.

I have never tried the 1.7TC, but do have a 1.4TC and 2TC version 2 which I use with the 70-200.

I found the 1.4TC does not make too much difference to speed or IQ. The 2TC does need reasonably bright conditions to work however and does slow down the AF.

I kept my 70-300VR as it is a lot easier to carry around than the 70-200. I would say that its AF performance is somewhere between the 70-200 + 1.4TC and 2TC (but nearer the 1.4)
