Any comments on the Nikon 70-300 zoom with the second generation Vibration technology for shooting aircraft. How would it compare with the 70-200 VR2 with 1.4 teleconverter? Any other options? merv:thinking::thinking:

I had a 70-300 VR - it's a fantastic lens for the price. At 300mm it's a little soft, but not too bad to worry about. I now have the 70-200 VR1 and 1.4TC - superb!! But a new 70-200 VR2 and TC will be about 5 times the price of the 70-300 VR!

Here's a couple with the 70-300VR:

Nikon 300mm F/4 would be worth a look. Don't have any personal experience of the 2 lenses you've listed but the 300mm f/4 is very well regarded.

The 70-200 + TC would be the better combo, sharper and faster, but it is many times more expensive and much heavier.

I've got a 70-200 VR II - I don't recommend you put a 2x TC on it.

The 70-300 VR is quite good.

If you are looking to put TC's on a 70-200 VR, then you bought too short a lens, and should have bought a longer one!

Never buy a a 200mm lens, if you need a 300mm one!

Thanks guys. I have the 300/f2.8 but find it not versatile enough for planes as they change their position so fast and can fill the overfill the frame so quickly. The Reds were perfoming here last Saturday over the sea and I felt they would be too far off for the 70-200 on its own so added the 1.4 TC. Its fine for motorsport for which I bought it. The 70-300 would give me that extra bit of reach with a zoom without using a TC. Just knocking ideas around so thanks for your views. merv:thinking::thinking:

Hi Puddleduck - I see your pics were at 300mm - was that with a zoom or prime?
