Has anyone tried the old 80-200 2.8 push pull lens on the 24mp cameras and if so what was the iq like?

Had one, on my D610, which I thought was a great lens. IQ was certainly very good. Only reason, I sold it on, was because I purchased a Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC.

I've got the twin ring version, which I sold, and then took it back due to the buyer having financial problems.
I was going to sell it again, but the IQ is great on the D750, so I might keep it!
AFAIK, the push pull version is similar IQ wise.

I use one with a 36mpx D810 and have zero complaints regarding the image quality, it's my most frequently used lens. Focus accuracy on the D version is poor at the long end at very close distances. (Sub 1.8m) The original AF doesn't suffer from this issue as it has something to do with the distance information. (removing the distance brush supposedly fixes it)

These are all the shots I've taken with mine. I have a push pull AF-D. (same optics as the AF, AF-D push pull, and 2 ring AF-D.)

Had one which was used primarily on film bodies but also on a D50 and D80

AF can be a tad slow and noisy in comparison to modern gear but don't forget these lenses date back 30 years or so.

As for IQ.....absolutely superb. The optics are excellent. Even wide open the results were more than acceptable.

Why don't i have it anymore.....Basically it was sitting around doing nothing for much of the time as I now rarely shoot longer lengths than 105mm and i have primes that cover me upto that focal length and of course they're lighter!

Definetly worth a punt...even if you find it's not for you, it's very unlikely you won't be able to pull your outlay back if/when you sell it as even in 2016 they're quite sought after.

Still have a push pull in my choice of lenses. I actually prefer the push pull for some things. The image quality is as good as the twin ring version as far as I can see and nobody seems to moan about those on 24/36Mp Nikons.

I have the chance of one at a good price so I'll go for it. Thanks guys.
