I am thinking of making this my next lens for my D700 does anyone use one and what are there thoughts on this lens

I get mine tomorrow and its got amazing reviews for being pin sharp etc... only faults ive read is its abit on the heavy side but I think I will manage that for the top results.
 
Its lovely, i've been playing with mine today :naughty: theres a nice weight to it and im very impressed with what i've seen so far :)
 
I have three words for my Nikon 24-70mm "fantastic, fantastic and fantastic" This lens lives up to the hype:)
 
I have just used my new one on a two day shoot with a top French latex model and to say the results are outstanding are an understatement, the lens is simply superb and far superior to the 28-70 I replaced, sharp, contrasty, perfect, it is the must have Nikon lens.

aye, it's a very good lens :)
 
I've been doing quite a bit of research on this lens and I've not found many who have anything bad to say about it. I'm seriously considering replacing my current 17-55mm with this lens for when I go to glastonbury this year.
Only downside I can find is the weight which isnt a problem for reletivly short sessions but I tend to have my camera with me for at least 12 hours at a time when I'm at glastonbury.
Suppose I'll just have to think of the quality of the shots I'll be getting to get me through the pain. :)
 
I really like mine ... I thought it would be secondary to my 14-24 but it just simply isn't.

You won't regret it.
 
Awesome piece of glass... I love it everytime I manage to borrow it from my colleague.

My only negative on it is that it makes for a heavy bit of kit for a walkabout - its a single minded photography piece of kit... and the bloody lens hood keeps falling off when reversed. Grrrr!

I'll still buy one eventually though! Great for Motocross!
 
I may as well join in! It is a superb lens. Can't see myself ever parting with mine.

Yes it is heavy and combined with a D3 and a ringflash it is seriously heavy, but that is the price you pay if you want quality images.
 
Yes it's heavy, but lighter than the 28-70 it replaced. Aesthetically I find it doesn't look as 'purposeful' as the older lens either, being slightly longer and narrower in the lens-body.
The lens hood had a tendency to fall off even with the quick-release clip now found on Pro Nikon lens hoods, so I taped it in place with self-amalgamating rubber tape covered in sniper tape.

Optically it's excellent: pin-sharp throughout with a fast AF that's nice and quiet.
I have both lenses (until the 24-70 goes back to the QM's store in September along with all my other issued kit) and I'm currently debating whether to upgrade the 28-80 (which is my personal lens) with the newer model.
I'll be doing some serious head-to head testing between now and September...
 
I note you say to use on your D700 well congrats you just made the perfect match.
Fantastic lens but it only blew me away once on my D700 as on my previous D90 and D300 it was good but for some reason the D700 with 24-70 is a match made in heaven.

I'll be very interested to see the results of Robs head to head, although I'm so happy with mine it'll take something very special to make me change it.

Haha! Thats offended the sensibilities of the "wrap it in cotton wool brigade" :thumbs:
 
Cracking lens, well matched to the D700.
Some say it is heavy but to be honest you get use to it, it's on my camera all the time.

Probably my most used lens. My hood is taped on too - not quite as colourfully as Robs though :)
 
I must say that I've never had a problem with my hood falling off, but then I'm not jumping out of helicopters under enemy fire. :D

Just to echo others, the 24-70mm f:2.8 is sublime. Buy one and and bequest all your worldly goods to it in your will - I guarantee you'll love it that much.
 
Its rubbish, absolutely rubbish....... not having one. Buy one immediately as they are rather good :)

I bit the bullet and got myself this lens last week, it's simply amazing! I'm on a crop body and loving the results I'm getting, you will not be disappointed!
 
Already I've noticed a reason to upgrade my personal 28-70f/2.8 for a new Nikkor 24-70.
This weekend, after some shots taken in spectacularly low light (we never went under 1600 iso and a lot of the time I was shooting at 3200) I noticed the older lens hunted a bit on low-contrast subjects whereas the newer lens seemed to lock-on far more easily.

This was never previously an issue as we just couldn't shoot in very low light without flash as the sensors weren't good enough, but with the D3 and D3s, I can see where I'll be forcing myself to try and use the whole range of the cameras' capabilities and to do that I'll need a lens capable of achieving this...
 
Never used the 28-70, but the 24-70 is voodoo powered and locks on like a charm everytime. Fantastic!
 
I tried one and it was beautiful. It's not without it's faults (what lens isn't?) but it's the best standard zoom on the market. Perfect on FX.

My favourite lens is the AFS 50mm f1.4 but the 24-70 comes close and gets used more :)

Sadly due to financial circumstances I had to part with my D3 24-70 along with 70-200 VR and my other fave 14-24mm.
Those three lenses really are the pinnacle of lens design and desirability.

I guess only time will tell if it was a wise move.:bonk::bang:

so have i and i thoughtit was only 35 heavier.
its a hell of a lens and can still be used on the older cameras as well

if price is a consideration there are 2 Nikkor AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8 D on the sales section,very underpriced :)

correct, definetley underpriced and it has more uses.
if i hadnt recentley bought one i would of bought yours and saved myself £300
the americans call it the beast after one was dropped in an alligator pit was then chewed a bit and still worked.:lol:
