Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR Lens - Good value for money?

Any Nikkor 55-300mm lens users here?


Interested in general feedback on this lens please? I know its never going to be a 70-200 f2.8 but is it good value for money for a walkabout daytime lens?

Almost went for it when it was on sale at Jacobs Digital for 199 quid. Thought it was a good price for its metal mount and VRII. Slrgear review rates it quite well too, not quite as good optically as the 55-200mm but less vignetting.

The only reason I didn't get it in the end was because of it was too big for my minimal setup, and that it uses 58mm filter threads. Didn't want to spend money extra filters and step up/down converters than what I already have.

I have the basic 18-55 VR lens and it is really a great lens. So to compliment that I was thinking the 55-300 VRII and in time the 35mm F1.8 for low light and portrait. And with that...............I have what I need. And it doesn't break the bank.

I also have the SB400 and what a great flash. More than happy with that and it fits in with my needs.

I think I may just put the 55-300 at the top of the list.

Let us know how it turns out. Looks like Jacobs have it at 230 now. Not quite as good as their previous offer but still a brilliant price regardless.

The 35mm f1.8 is definitely a must have lens. Those 3 lenses should keep you happy for a while :)

Iv been lerking around here for a bit not but not posted.

I got the 55-300 from jacobs when they had it for £199. I am more than happy with the lens but i am only a beginer it DSLR.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that.................any chance you can fire up a few using spot focus and higher iso settings?

Maybe try a fair few of the same composition to get an idea of the quality vs value for money ?

Cheers if you can bud...........just to get a better idea ...........and could you leave them on flickr at full resolution so I can look at all sizes?

thanks...looks like the focus has nailed the twigs rather than the bird

have you any landscape [ my fav] at the 55mm end

sorry no landscapes yet as not really had much cance to use the lens since i got it.

the bird pic was the day after i got it so the first time i used it. i have a pic of a bird in flight but its at 270mm. will post that if you want to see it.

thanks but i'll wait to see if you post some landscapes

got a tripod..? and a remote release - as these make a huge difference in sharpness
