Nikon AFS F4 D with Nikon Teleconvertors

The 2x TC doesn't work that well with the 300mm f/4 AF-S.

The 1.7x is good, but unless you really need to get to 510mm with the 1.7x, the 1.4x Kenko or Nikkors are a better bet.

What lens are you referring to, Iain. What focal length?

Check out the TC 20E II lens compatibility. It can only be used with around a dozen lenses as far as I understand. Probably the big wide max aperture funny money ones.

Couldn't have put it better

Mind you, the 1.7 is brilliant, I got some fantastic results at the motoGP last year with that combo

can pass on some samples if you like?

I get really good results with the 1.7TC on my 300f4 AF-S, in fact as good as with the 1.4TC.

300f4 AF-S + 1.7TC @ ISO3200

Sorry, the 300mm lens

Over on dpreview there is a thread with images posted using the 300f4 AF-S and the new TC-2.0E III, it is said that it will AF, however you would be at f8 so some semblance of decent light would help.

Yet there is a single report that it does not AF with the 200-400, which is strange as that is also an f4 lens.

Could you post a link to that dpreview thread, pl. Martyn.
I had a look, but could not find it.

works fine with my 1.4X, just got a 1.7X so hoping to give that a run out at the weekend :)

No problem, I stumbled upon it via Fred Miranda, dpreview is not exactly the easiest forum to navigate, or read.

Thanks Martyn - that TC still has my interest although the pics on dpreview all have sharpening artefacts. That's not the fault of the TC, but maybe the original images were not as crisp as one would hope.
I guess the jury is still out and I'll need to keep looking for other images taken with that lens and TC combination.
Those I have seen on here with the 300mm and 1.4 and 1.7 have been very good.

Personally I think that a 2xTC on an f4 is pushing it, but I am open minded.

The rumour is that new versions of the 1.4 and 1.7 are in the pipeline, how accurate they are I do not know, but there is said to be some major Nikon announcements soon

I am inclined to that view also until I see convincing evidence to the contrary.

Bodies like the D300/D700/D3 will AF with lens combos up to f8. I suspect probably only when you select one of the AF cross points and of course you'd need some good light to make it work consistently. Whether or not the IQ is acceptable to you is a moot point, for me it isn't.

I use my 1.7x TC with a 300 f4 AFS a lot and its good enough both in terms of AF and IQ.
