I really wouldn't of thought it worth worrying about. I think I have three lose in my bag and its never been an issue

It does say in your manual that if metal touches the metal points on the battery it could short. Personally I always have the covers on when not in use. Why take the chance?

Just put it in a small ziplock bag, any plastic should insulate the terminals the voltage is so low.

I use sticky tape over the terminals. It both protects against the unlikely event of a short circuit and identifies charged batteries when the bag has a mixture.

Got told off by an airport security guard once that the terminals need to be covered when flying with spare batteries. So I started using them again and it's been an easy habit to maintain.

The way that the batteries are made mean that there is little chance of a short, BUT if they did short, then you may have a fire.

In your camera bag? :'(

In your car? :'(:'(

In your home? :'(:'(:'(

I personally wouldn't take a chance.

As Swanseamale says a plastic bag is better than nothing.
