Does anyone know how much it costs to change the shutter mechanism on the D3? been offered a D3 for £750ono but waiting to find out how high the shutter count is and i`m expecting it to be high.

but concerned how long it may last.

any idea of a price guide per shutter count?
 
hmmm still not sure if £750 is a good price or not? what do you think?

If it was you guys what kinda shutter would you be willing to go upto before backing out the sale?

i`m getting the shutter count tomorrow
 
I think I paid around £1200 for mine with 100,000 ish on the shutter I think. I've probably put around 15,000 ish since then too and touch wood its worked a treat. If it was around 150k mark I think it would be a steal for £750 personally.
 
The shutter is rated for 300,000 clicks , £750 is cheap as chips, so all depends on the count

Thanks for your help guys, will be interesting to see what the shutter is, not gonna get my hopes up too much, the price sounds excellent but the shutter count is looming
 
id prob buy it anyway, i think its £180 to replace the shutter. so when it eventually does go its not that bad and you will have effectsively a brand new d3 for 180 quid extra
 
I wouldn't touch it if anything over 150K - such a well used camera may well have more problems. A grubby sensor, missing bits and bobs, cracks in the sealing, buttons wore down etc ... depending on the original user, may have dragged it through the muck as a wildlife photographer last few years. Have you seen pictures of it yet?

He may have also looked after it very well, all my kit is used in and around football/rugby fields but is immaculate, i look after my gear knowing if i dont it will have a massive knock on effect to the resale value.

I had a D3 shutter replaced about 3 years ago after it had only done 7k clicks, as it was a used camera i had to pay and i think it cost approx £210
 
By a curious coincidence I just got off the phone with Nikon.

My D3 started throwing an "Err" message at Christmas.

It's had a new shutter unit plus full service and all the grips and stuff. Price was £335.39 + vat. They received it last Thursday and it will be back with me tomorrow.

It had done something like 190k clicks. It had a new "mirror box" (which is nothing to do with the mirror) a couple of years ago and from memory that cost a little more.

£750 is a great price.
 
The long and short of the matter is that you just don't know what if anything will fail... it could have 50,000 clicks and then fail with numerous replacement parts required OR go on to 300,000+ requiring nothing, it is a bit of a lottery, as with any second hand item. But at £750 and finding out a bit of history (including its actual shutter count and any repairs so far and when repaired) would be my advice

Who offered it? Is someone you actually know, or a gumtree special?

Be very careful if you don't see it in the flesh.

He`s a good friend of mine who lives in london, he works for a top photo agency, if not the biggest, he sourced it out for me so i`d be relying on him to check it out for me. i believe its an ex press camera although was told its in good condition, thats why i`m expecting the shutter count to be hammered.
