Yes
Have any of you D300 owners out there experienced a (significantly) reduced AF performance as the battery runs down?

No I haven`t Donna, I did use mine for a while before getting the grip that it now wears,I cannot recall any issues as battery life erodes.

I've not seen that, and I don't think it would be the expected outcome.

Is this with a grip?

I have had the camera fail to shoot due to very low battery (with the grip and AA weak batteries) but even then it would shoot a shot or 2 after a few mins recovery, no AF issues at all though (and the batteries were totally knackered)

No, not with grip.
Settings were battery 2/1 bars, multi shot (low speed), 21 focus points, AF button focus, 12 bit raw, aperture priority, 70-300mm vr lens at 300 VR on.
I was panning to shoot a Barn Owl 15 feet away and the lens just refused to focus and all I am left with is 6 frames full of a white blob :bang: I was not a happy bunny.

Has the 70-300 got a focus limiter on it? If so was that inadvertently switched on?

No focus limiter, the lens is only a consumer zoom and f/5.6 at 300mm so I know I am on the limit but I would have hoped it would have got better shot by shot but alas no.

I'm incling to think that the battery level is unrelated and that something else was the cause. How much ambient light was there? Was there enough for the AF system to work?

Loads of light, 10:00 am cloudless, open farmland.

Thanks skipper but camera set up as per your link and has been since I bought it.

This may just be another parameter that I will need to take into account in future. All I can do is rue a great lost opportunity.
