Found this quote on amazon:

Autofocus is quick and reliable. At least it is now! I did have to apply an Autofocus correction factor of -28(!!!) for this lens on my D300. Yes, that's more than you can technically apply without tricking the firmware. It was a mile out on ALL of my cameras, and I did have to send the lens to Sigma several times (including my camera the last time) to get it fixed.

Amazon

Can't find out how to do this though - I suspect one of my lens could do with a little more than the AF fine tune can currently provide.

Any ideas?

send the lens back - its faulty.

You can't go past -20 or +20.

Never work around QC or failures that need warranty work with fine tune - its a band-aid not a fix IMHO.

I have for one lens I had, but was just interested how to push past 20 as mentioned in my original post?

As I said earlier - you can't go over 20.

I'm right, the person on Amazon is wrong :)

I believe you when you say you can't go over 20 normally, but is it not possible even with firmware tricks?

No, its not. There are no "firmware tricks" or hacks.

Even if you could write your own firmware to raise the value, it wouldn't upload to the camera, as it won't be check-summed.

Forget it.
