Can you recommend a good guide book for the D300 regards

Ive got 'Mastering the Nikon D700' by Nikonians Press, (search on Amazon). Excellent book and they do one for the D300.

Thom Hogan has a good reputation on other photographic sites and his eBooks are bought by many.
I have his D700 eBook and it came within the week....very handy as a reference book also as it goes into far more detail than the manufacturers handbook and he gives his personal preferences as a user guide

thankyou all for your info went for the David Busch's Nikon D300 Guide to Digital SLR Photography from WH Smiths £15.53

a related question if I may, do these books tell you anything you can't find in the manual? I realise they are probably more accessible and easier to follow

Yes they do. In the manual it may say 'change to evaluative metering when in a crowd', my answer is 'Why?' but the David Busch book will tell you why and explain how it affects the camera and your shot.

In other words the manual tells you to do it and the book explains why you should or should not do it. And you get extra info and tips that are not in the manual.

I found the Magic Lantern Guide to the D200 very useful and still find the equivalent for the D700 handy.

Doesn't tell you much more than the manual but does use easier to understand language and explains things rather than just presenting instructions.
