I have recently noticed that the rubber grip on my d300 as begun peeling off. It goes the entire height of the grip and stretches around to the red triangle.

I have just emailed nikon and they said that it "is physical damage and therefore invalidates any guarantee given to the equipment"

However. There is no way i could have caused it seeing as it's the glue UNDER the grip that has failed. I was just wondering who else has had this problem to see if i can claim it's an inherent fault.

Thanks.

Edit: Here is the Exact email

"Thank you for contacting Nikon regarding the warranty cover

I was sorry to learn of the problems you have experienced with your camera.
Unfortunately, as the damage to your camera is physical, any guarantee given to the equipment would have been invalidated.
If you would like to send the unit in for repair, please send to the address detailed below."

I have read about the rubber grips coming loose over on FM, the general opinion is to glue it back on.

Seems to be quite common with Nikon SLR/DSLR's. I've heard of other people complaining about this - I have an old 'low-mileage' F100 and it's fine, but I've heard of these having this problem as well.

I've just replaced the grip on my D300, Nikon said it was wear and tear, so I had to stump up the guts of £24 plus p+p for a new one :annoyed:

the general consensus just seems to be 'superglue'... it's happened with my D200, and will doubtless pretty soon start with my D300's... ah well. probably half to do with how I hold the camera, half an inherent flaw really... glue in a syringe dispenser should work though :)

That depends....the grip on mine stretched, due no doubt to the way I hold/carry the camera, so it was impossible to simply glue it back on. It looks all shiny and new with the replacement rubber though :)

As a confirmed Nikon user for many years, I think this sucks even though it has never happened to me!

There are countless incidences reported on the web about Nikon rubber grips peeling off and even though Nikon KNOW THIS, the best they can come up with is:-:rules: Unfortunately, as the damage to your camera is physical, any guarantee given to the equipment would have been invalidated

I think this is a completely pathetic way to treat customers and as I said, I think this attitude sucks!:annoyed::razz:

It happened on my D80, after it was just out of warranty! I stuck it back on using double sided sticky tape - I think that's what Nikon use - I recall seeing on another forum where someone had ordered the replacement grips from Nikon. My D300 is fine so far though. :D

Edit: See post on Nikon Cafe (although for D200)

A £24 (if you replace it) fix on a DSLR is not the end of the world. I'd rather replace it myself than be parted with it while Nikon fix it.

yes it does happen fairly regularly. By that I mean it is not an uncommon problem, not that it happens on a regular basis to an individual camera. My F5 suffered it, and the stretching of it - they did replace it for me though when I asked.

Rubbers on focus and zoom rings do the same thing. I would write to them again - and rather than get snotty, simply ask if their grips are meant to come off or could it simply be a bad batch of glue? You are then giving them a get out (wasn't us, was the glue maker) and they can send you a rubber grip for you to put on - very easy. If you do, KEEP YOUR OLD ONE. Unless they want to seeit first. Fitting the grip is about as difficult as doing up velcro. Their initial letter is probably a fend off - just don't accept it, ignore it and write, NOT EMAIL, pick up a pen and write, in a proper manner. Remember your correct letter layout, begin with "Dear Sir", finish with "Yours faithfully" - a properly constructed, nicely hand written, well thought out letter has the power of 50 swords.....so think about what you are going to say and draft it on rough paper first.

What have you got to lose?

My D200 has suffered the same (same body design I suppose). Happened about six months after buying it. Never bothered with warranty mallarky. I've just put it down to overuse, whacked loads of superglue on it and forgot about it. Does make using the front command dial a bit hard at times though.

Yeah I have the same problem with my D300. Only a small amount has come loose just in front of the shutter release, but still annoying. If it gets worse I'll probably glue it myself. Good to know that a replacement grip is only £24 though.

Thanks guys, nice to know it's not just me! Happened on my D200 too, nowhere near as bad as this though.

On my SB600 the rubber button/cover you press to adjust the angle and rotation of the flash head came off, I just siliconed it back on and it's stayed on no problem. I suspect you could do the same with the rubber grip on the D300?

My D200 already had it, near the bottom of grip at back, but it never got any worse in my ownership. The D300 has been fine over 26K actuations too. BUT, and here is the thing, I have quite small hands, so possibly rub the edges less than bigger handed people. Dunno, just a guess, but the I would just carefully glue it back down as soon as it started tbh, I don't think its a big deal as such.

My F5 suffered the same problem, the entire grip came off. It was brand new too and under warrantee. However, when we took it too the camera shop, they just stuck it back on with double sided! Next day it was off again. Camershop said they would order in a new grip from Nikon. That was 3 and a half years ago! I've kind of given up, as I don't use it anyway, so can't be bothered to faff around complaining etc. I would not try sticking it back on as that invalidates the warrantee. My camera shop did, presumably unknowing! Not good though, I believe its only Nikons that this happens to as well.

Canon are a bit backwards!

We had a batch of D1 and D1x cameras that this happened to in Iraq... about a dozen in total...we put that down to the heat.
My 28-70 f/2.8 has a slightly loose focus-ring rubber, which I'll be replacing next year...
I agree it's crap for Nikon to cop-out and pull the old "Physical Damage" line out of the hat again and again...
It's not like you set upon it with a ball-pein hammer or anything...you 'held' it...oooohhh... with your hands...lol

Well 1 SLR and 3 DSLRs later and I've ever come across this 'common' problem.

I've not had the problem myself, but have heard about it quite a lot over the last few years, I haven't heard any other makes with this problem (I NOT trying to start a N vs C war here!! ;) )

Any Canon, Sony or Pentax uses with this issue??

To be honest, as this was 'merely' a cosmetic problem (and because I hadn't paid for any of this kit) I wasn't all that bothered - most of the black paint is gone from my cameras within 6 months anyway...

When I do start buying my own kit again, I may see things in a somewhat different light however.
So far I've not heard of any issues with D3 or D3x, and I heard of none with D2x either - and we used that here in mid-summer as well...
