Nikon D3S and lens advice

I sold my D700 and picked up a D3s ridiculously cheap which I won't complain about :) I was using the 28-300mm whilst on my honeymoon with the D700 and the images were great, but it lacked some sharpness unless I stepped upto around f8 which wasn't ideal in low lit areas and at night. I sold the lens and I am looking for something faster.

I mainly do casual shooting, some family, holidays, etc. I have a Nikon 17-35mm 2.8 which I use for work when shooting properties. I want something that will give me a good range and the 28-300 was amazing at that. I have my eyes set on the 70-200 but also the 24-70. I have a feeling I will get annoyed with the limited range of the 24-70 as I don't fancy changing lens every time I realize I am out of reach (it annoyed the hell of me when I did it with a Canon 5d MK II and the 24-70, I just kept the 70-200 on all the time instead).

Any advice?
 
24-120 f/4? Seems to get good reviews and is supposedly as sharp as the 24-70
 
Sounds like you're not going to be happy with anything other than the 70-200mm to be honest. If you don't think that you need the lower end of the 24-70mm, then it seems an obvious choice.
Enjoy the D3s. It's a cracking body...

Thanks for the advice guys, I am tempted to get the 70-200 but there will be times when I don't fancy having such a large lens when on holiday with the lads etc. I can use the long end of my 17-35 and get some good pics but really thinking if I will miss the gap between 35-70mm. I can always wallk a few steps closer to my subject I imagine.

I considered the 24-120 F4 but I need something faster
 
You want something faster but don't want a large lens. That's the only way they can make them that fast, I'm afraid to say...

besides, with the ISO performance on the D3s surely even at f/4 it should still cope with most situations?
 
This is at F4 it will bump the ISO up and even at 3200 and even it some situations, 6400, I find usable shots. But I prefer to be able to get a solid shot and at night in paticular I would prefer a 2.8 which will be able to give me a faster shutter speed aswell.

On a side note, just bought a 70-200 VRII from Calumet and must say WOW, even wide open it is impressive!
 
I am looking for a 24-70, as soon as the mods feel I am not "spamming" and grant me access to the classifieds I will be on the look. Prefer buying one from a enthusiast rather than ebay, but mods still not allowing access :( I might sell up my 17-35mm to fund one actually, don't do much landscapes to warrant it.
 
You got 164 posts have they changed the rules again or something? i thought you would be allowed at 100 posts.
 
I need to contribute more to the forums apparantly, because my first 100 was in quick succession then I went quiet (because I was on my honeymoon) and I am now active again because I am just back recently so they are still evaluating :(

ok, so I couldn't resist- hopefully those that follow the forums will know what I mean.

Regards the rules- came up on Avforums earlier today (or yesterday now I guess)- it's very difficult- you're damned if you do and damned if you don't- at the end of the day the mods are trying to protect people so I think you just have to bear with it. I'm sure it wont be long:thumbs:
 
I appreciate what the mods are doing, they don't want people signing up and just using the classifieds and not contributing to the forum discussions. Here's hoping the mods reconsider my case, I want to look for a 24-70 in the classifieds!

F2.8 to F4 is only one full stop. You're not losing that much, and the 24-120 has VR so you can retain some shutter speed in lower light.
