Hi. I am new to posting on TP so please be gentle with me! There is a great fear I am going to live up to my new user name with the following question. I have a Nikon D90 and have various lenses and have been using this fine not a problem, not an expert by any means but very keen to learn. Anyway Santa delivered me a Nikon D3s for xmas which is fab but I am baffled with something that should be relatively simple.

I am trying to put the camera onto continual shooting mode and I have found the dial on the top left of the camera which changes the camera fron S (single) Cl (continual low) and Ch (continual high). On Ch it sounds like a machine gun and certainly makes the effort but when I review the pictures it only shows that it has taken one image albeit with the continual shooting symbol in the corner of the image........ am I being .....well Dippy??

Please help me....x
 
If the camera is on CH and you hold the shutter button down it should continue taking pictures until the buffer fills up.....

Thank you...... it certainly makes all the effort, sounds like its playing the part but no images to match ......??
 
what do the photos taken and photos remain displays on the top LCD say - is it as you'd expect? Not sure what you mean by this?

Thank you. I think considering my current predicament... all the gear and no idea ... would be appropriate!!
 
Try it on CL and see what it does then.

Is the card pushed all the way home?
 
Andrea, try a wee experiment. Put an empty/formatted card in the camera, set it to shoot in raw and note the number of shots that the camera says are available. Then put it on CH and fire away until the buffer fills up and then check and see how many shots the card has left.

I'm also wondering, as Hugh did, what you mean by the Continual shooting symbol....:shrug:

Sorry I mean the little image which reflects the fact that you have the camera set to CH. Re the photos taken/left exactly as I would expect from a single shot mode and even thought it has sounded like it has taken multiple images when I review the image it shows only one as taken. sorry if i am not explaining myself well.

Yes already tried it on cl with the same results, only a slightly less effective machine gun sound. Yes the card is pushed all the way in and as I say it registers one image.
 
just so I'm clear - on the top LCD, when you fire a burst (on a new card) the shots taken moves from 1 to 2

Thats not how the D3S should behave in CH mode. Can you get another card and try that - it sounds like a writing issue, if your camera sounds like a machine gun in CH its certainly taking photos but not writing them

sorry should have said multiple exposure mode symbol

yes that is correct, I am just perform a quick test as flash in the pan suggested. see below.
 
it sounds to me like somethings wrong with the card writter in camera or the card itself - is there a way to try with a new card?

ok i just did that, i let off three bursts and the displays registered it as 3 images, based on the fact i have the camera set to 10 shots per burst i would expect that to show 30 images.

just off the change cards but these are both brand new cards so hope its not a problem with them.

Press menu button / go to section d (shooting/display) / go to d3 (max continuous release) / options are 1 to 130 shots - if it's on 1, change it to 130.

(NB. This is probably a red herring but check anyway in case something quirky is going on).
 
Hi Andrea,
Go into the menu and scroll down to the image that looks like a pencil. Click on it and go across to D3 Continuos shooting. You can enter how many shots you want it to take as a maximun number 1-130.
It is possible that yours is set to 1.

That kind of supports my theory in the above post, you have the camera set to combine multiple exposures, in this case every ten shots are combined together to produce one final image.

Try another wee experiment, switch the number 10 down to 2, repeat the test firing and see if, for example, 30 shots fired results in 15 images on the card....
 
If you set it to a burst of 10, that is the maximum shots it will take in that burst. So you keep your finger on the shutter and it will only take 10.

Is Multiple Exposure switched on?

To find out: press menu button on back of camera / go to shooting menu (camera icon on left) / scroll down to Multiple Exposure - if it says ON, turn it OFF - now try a continuous burst in either CH or CL.

Ha, yes I see what you mean now. I never use mutiple exposure mode. :thumbs:

ohh... did say I was dippy...... so how do I put it right??

thank you I had it set to 10
 
To turn off multiple exposure:

  • Press menu button on back of camera
  • Go to shooting menu (camera icon on left)
  • Scroll down to Multiple Exposure - if it says ON, press multi selector
  • Highlight RESET press multi selector again to OK
