Nikon D4 Owner Thread

Just took a gamble on a D4 with 440K actuations for £300, my thinking is it made it this far it'll go longer! How do others find the AF-D lenses?

Some of the AF-D lenses are great. They are not as corrected and sharp as the AF-S ones. Good choices are the 35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4. For landscapes the AF-S lenses might be better.

Seeing this has reminded me to take my D4 out for a spin, tomorrow.

Yeah got the 35 and 28 from Ffordes the other week at good prices, already have the 50 1.8, 85 is on my list as well! The Af-s lenses still too steep for my liking.

zoom wise I have the 20-35 and 35-70 both f2.8 top of the tree pro lenses in their day and I am very happy with both, I had the 80=200 as well and foolishly moved it on to get the 24-70, the 80-200 is still one of the sharpest and best rendering lenses I have ever owned. It is better than the 70-200 IMO

I haven't done a head to head on the 85mm 1.8 vs 1.4 but the 1.4 is very good for people.

28-105 is nice to if you are after something light and cheap. So is the 28-70 f/3.3 to something kit lens from the film era.

Quite a lot of the D lenses are just the AF lenses with extra electronics for TTL flash. Some of the AF lenses are AIS lenses with autofocus. I am pretty sure the 50mm 1.4 D lens goes all the way back to the AIS version.

I will second the 28-105 as well, fantastic lens, fantastic on D750 as well, when you get up in MP to D800 + it loses something, although 28-200 would appear more of the same, i could never make it work, dont like it even on film.

Should give you some idea of the 85 - 1.8

I wish I was as good as this camera.

Gotta love the D4. I have one that I bought back in 2013 and it's still going strong. More recently, I've add both a D850 and a Z8 to my camera bag but the D4 still gets extensive use when I shoot events. I like to stick a 70-200mm on the D4 and use a 24-70mm on the D850 for more detailed, close up shots and WA stuff. The D4 still produces beautiful images after all these years, especially in low light!
