Nikon D5100 update and battery problem

Hi all.

I got sent an email by Nikon saying there was an update for my Nikon D5100. Seeing as though I've never updated it I decided to go ahead and update it and now, when I switch my camera on, I get this message:
"This battery cannot be used. Choose battery designated for use in this camera".
I use a battery grip (aftermarket Meike) with a genuine Nikon battery and an aftermarket, but previously compatible, battery. So, I tried taking the aftermarket one out of the grip and the camera still came up with the same message. I tried this with both batteries and got the same result so I took the grip off and tried inserting the Nikon battery and it worked.

Now, this is where it gets confusing. On finding that it worked with the Nikon battery on its own, I replaced the grip and inserted only the Nikon battery, this worked. So, I inserted the aftermarket battery, this also worked. And, when I take out the genuine Nikon battery, the camera still works. I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering why it came up in the first place and if anyone has had a similar issue and if so, am I going to have problems in the future?

I did read somewhere that the grip and batteries have to be inserted in a certain order but cannot remember.
 
I'm a complete coward when it comes to Nikon updates, they scare the hell out of me! The thought of it going belly up and turning my 5100 into a doorstop (stop giggling Canon users).. just for a few more fps and longer battery life, neither of which have ever caused me a problem or a concern.... I find I use this little beauty more than my D700 these days! purely on weight grounds.
Matwest... I was under the impression that the D5100 is chipped to only accept Nikon batteries?
 
I've been wrestling with whether to download the update since I got the email a few days ago.

So far I've been thinking my battery life gives me no issues whatsoever so I thought it wasn't worth the bother, but is the fps rate increased too Paddysnapper? I didn't see that.
 
As with all firmware updates, read up on what the new firmware changes and only do the update if any of the issues affect you - some don't. By all means download them to your computer but put off installing them until they're needed (if ever!)

Well, when I bought the battery it said it had been programmed for the D5100. It was cheap so I thought it was worth a punt and sure enough, it worked! I just wish I could remember where I bought it. I might have to trawl through some old emails.

To be fair, I probably should have looked into exactly what was getting updated before I updated. Lesson learnt!
