AI-s lenses don't have any "D" distance encoding (which is only useful if the flash is hotshoe mounted anyhow)..so if you are wanting to go off camera then you don't lose or gain anything.
So the answer is yes - CLS stands for Crappy Lighting System anyway..its always been a bit randon, so even without "D" encoding you'll get results depending on phases of the Moon and wind direction.
