Agree, I have seen the difference in video quality between the D800 and D800e and the D800 does a much better job.
 
Folks I'm looking for a little bag advise.
I'm going to Paris next month and I want to take my D7000, 35mm & 50mm and possibly another lens but I've been looking for a bag that would be fairly lightweight and give me some space for things like my wallet and phone along with the kit.

I'm probably looking for a shoulder bag and I've been tempted by an albeit pricey Billingham but just wondered if anyone had any suggestions?
 
I'm like you Chris, I can't seem to find the bag that is 'just right'! The nearest are the Thinktank Retrospective 7 or 10 but they seem rather expensive (as does all the Thinktank stuff). One of them looks like the bag for me though - hopefully I'll find a good used one :cool:

Bags are always difficult aren't they?

I have a Crumpler Muffin Top 7500 into which I can get the D7000 with 18-70 fixed, a 70- 300 and 10-24. Difficult to get bigger flash in but can get SB400 in. Well made and not too big on the shoulder but I don't like the very large wrapover top - it gets in the way when trying to get stuff in and out and the velcro and clip fastening is a bit awkward.

But I bought a cheap (£15 ebay) Lowepro Toploader Zoom 55Aw for shorter walks etc and I really like it. Smaller than the Crumpler and so main disadvantage is the size but pros are:

because elongated it hangs well at the side;
long strap;
it zips open and AWAY from the body (which I really like as it feels safer taking out the gear.);
pretty deep;
light.

I can get the D7k in it with 70 - 300 attached and just about sit the 18-70 at the bottom. No flash or other lenses but there is a zip pocket at the front which would take a flash and/or wallet and phone, filters and battery

For the money I paid, I think that it is excellent.

Hmm, that's useful Alan as I've just ordered a used Toploader 50 for when I'm out hiking with a rucksack - I like to have the camera available so your comments indicate that I've picked the right case (I'd only have a 50mm or 18-70mm on the camera). I use a little Tamrac Aero zoom for my GX1 and that works perfectly, all the filters etc. just go into the rucksack lid pocket.
It's bags for solely photo trips to keep everything handy that are difficult to choose - too big, too small...
Talking of Crumpler, I like the look of the 6 million dollar home, but it's not available from what I can see.

My LCD display has started staying on after I flick the switch, have I inadvertantly changed a setting ?:shrug:
 
Pat, the illumination setting is in the custom settings menu d10, you've probably switched it to on while you've been fiddling again...:D
 
Well the Eagle has landed. To bad it has coincided with a bit of man flu...
 
I rang my local dealer an hour ago, that i've pre-ordered with & they still haven't heard when they'll get them in stock.

I spoke with a couple of dealers over the past couple of days and it appears nikon is renowned for lack of communication. One dealer on d800 launch didn't know how many they were getting until un hour before the delivery turned up!

EDIT and amazon are still showing 21st.

Arent Mathers near to you, they had a keen price.

Can't even return mine! They'll take a 15% restocking fee (£90). Just hurts.
 
My dealer called me today to say they can post my new D7100 or I can collect tomorrow (Friday 15th). I have opted to collect this Saturday.

Clifton Cameras. I pre-ordered online but their communication (telephone) has been excellent. I'm in Hampshire but by chance I have some business to attend to near them on Saturday so I decided to collect.
 
On paper there is not too much between them, that review reads like the writer hasn't actually tried one and compared them.

'The new AF system? On paper, impressive but in practice, if one goes back to 2007 and reads D300 reviews, not a guaranteed improvement as many reviewers reported that, despite sharing the same AF system, the FF D3 was better than the APS-C D300. Why? Who knows, just reporting the opinions here'.

Nikon are not going to make a £1k camera that is just as good or outperforms £2k or £4k pro cameras, that would be crazy business sense as everyone would just buy the cheaper £1k camera. What I what to know is how well it compares to its peers in the dx range, ie the d7000 and d300s, is the autofocus better than these cameras? If it does not perform as well then the upgrade from these cameras for some is going to be a full frame d600 or d800 and skip the d7100. We all know the d800 or d4 are going to be better, they cost so much more. I can't wait until the users who pre-ordered actually get the d7100 in real world situations rather these reviews just using the specs sheets.

Think i need some larger memory cards...
put 8GB in and set it to RAW + JPEG Normal
129 shots remaining lol.
 
Opening D7100 Raw FIles in Lightroom (Mac)

  • Download and install exiftool
  • Copy the D7100 raw files you wish to import to a folder.
  • Run the following command, substituting ‘FOLDER_NAME’ for the correct location
  • exiftool -model=”Nikon D5200” -ext nef FOLDER_NAME

Raw only, it's 148 photos on the 8GB.
14 bit compressed: 217
12 bit lossless: 191
12 bit compressed: 260

Normal Jpeg is ~6MB
RAW file is ~20MB (12bit compressed)
RAW file is ~25MB (12bit lossless)
RAW file is ~28MB (14bit compressed)
RAW file is ~30MB (14bit lossless)

I took 4 shots in the various modes:-
12 bit compressed - 25.6 MB
12 bit lossless compressed - 28.7 MB
14 bit compresses - 31.6MB
14 bit lossless compressed - 33.8 MB

Not as much variation as i thought there may be.
